Field Hockey Posts Fifth Win of Season

BETHANY, W.Va. – The Frostburg State University field hockey team posted its fifth win of the season with a decisive 6-0 victory over Bethany (W.Va.), Sunday afternoon.

Box Score

The win gives the Bobcats a 5-7 overall record while the Bison fall to 1-7. The six goals represent a season-high for Frostburg, eclipsing a 5-0 shutout over Sweet Briar late last week.

The Bobcats dominated and overwhelmed the Bison right from the opening whistle. Frostburg held a commanding 37-4 advantage in shots, including a 23-2 edge in the opening half.

The Bobcats boasted a balanced attack as six different players scored. Junior Linzy Martin was the loan player with more than two points as she scored one goal and added an assist, both in the first half.

Martin found senior Alli Elliott for the game’s first goal at 8:42. The tally was Elliott’s team leading 10th goal of the season.

A little over eight minutes later, freshman Ashley Johnson scored off a penalty corner to give the visitors a 2-0 cushion at 16:52.

Martin got in on the scoring action in the 26th minute as she scored her first of the season off an assist from sophomore Katie Farr. Junior Tiffany Weschler scored off a pass from freshman Lauren Smolla in the 32nd minute that capped a wild first half of play.

The Bobcats added a pair of insurance goals in the second half. Senior Erin Johns found freshman Amber McCabe for the Bobcats’ fifth goal of the game just 3:43 into the second half. Freshman Jackie Best capped the afternoon with her first goal of the season, an unassisted tally at 47:07.

Frostburg goalies Maggie Edwards and Megan Grimm split time in net as each played a half. Edwards earned the victory in the first stanza while Grimm made two saves in 35 minutes of action in the second.

FSU returns to action at Washington & Jefferson this Tuesday at 5:00 pm.
