Baseball Falls to Catholic 11-4

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team was unable to overcome two big innings by the Catholic Cardinals and fell, 11-4, in non-conference action at Bob Wells Field.

Box Score

Catholic (18-10) opened the game with a four-run first inning aided by four walks and two errors by the Frostburg defense.   Starter Joe Markiewicz Jr. failed to get out of the first inning, giving way to Tristen Beyer who got Tim Mierzwa to groundout with the bases loaded to end the Catholic threat.

Beyer got out of another bases loaded jam in the third.  Catholic had the bases loaded with nobody out, but Beyer was able to get Wesley Stonelake to ground into a fielder’s choice to third basemen Adam Summerfelt who threw home for the force play.  Beyer then got Dan Hinchcliff to line out to J.K. Filauro who flipped the ball to second base to cut down the Catholic runner.

FSU (17-13) finally got on the board in the fifth.  Torian Cyrus smoked a ball down the left field line that scored Leighton Cooper who was pinch running for Adam Baxley.  Filauro followed with another double to make the score 4-2.

Ryan D’Arcy threw a scoreless sixth for the Bobcats and they cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom half of the inning.  With runners at second and third, Mike Virbickis failed on a suicide squeeze play and the Cardinals were able to nail Summerfelt at the plate.  Later in the at-bat Virbickis hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Tyler Hawthorne.

Catholic added a run in the seventh before they blew the game open with six runs in the eighth.  The Cardinals had five hits in the inning, but it was prolonged by three costly Frostburg errors.

FSU tallied a run in eighth to make the score 11-4, but that would be all they could muster.

Cody Ellsworth also threw a scoreless inning of relief and Hawthorne was perfect in getting the final two outs.

Cyrus led the Bobcats with three hits and two RBIs and Summerfelt collected two hits on the afternoon.

FSU gets back to the Capital Athletic Conference portion of their schedule on Friday when they host Wesley at 3:30 p.m.
