FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women’s lacrosse team hung tough with nationally ranked Mary Washington, but eventually was dealt a 12-9 loss, Saturday.

The Bobcats (3-3, 1-1) didn’t back down from the challenge of facing their second nationally ranked opponent in the last week and hung with No. 15 ranked Mary Washington (5-2, 2-1) for much of the contest.
The Eagles led by a game-high six goals (7-1) with 2:21 left in the first half, but FSU would close to within three scores twice in the second half.
UMW opened the game with three goals over the first 9:04 for the early lead. Freshman Kaitlyn Dudley put the Bobcats on the board at 20:36 when she scored off an assist from junior Chelsea Feeney.
Mary Washington opened up a 7-1 cushion with four-consecutive goals over a 13-minute span that appeared to give the visitors control with just 2:21 left in the opening half.
Sophomore Megan White found senior Ali Kapustin for a goal just four seconds until intermission to give FSU some momentum at the break, despite trailing 7-2.
Bobcat sophomore Malory Brunett further cut into the deficit with a free position goal just 2:09 into the second half as FSU trailed by four, 7-3.
Brunett scored two more goals and junior Taylor Cassatt added one goal as part of a back-and-forth scoring jolt by both teams that ended with UMW leading 11-6 with 8:19 to play.
Frostburg then scored two goals to bring the score within three and give the hosts new life with just 5:51 to play. White found the net at 7:35 off a pass from junior Rachel Dwyer and sophomore Kaitlyn Kesecker scored an unassisted goal at 5:51 as the Bobcats trailed just 11-8.
Just over two minutes later, Keller Torrey scored her second goal of the half to give the Eagles some breathing room and a 12-8 lead.
Dudley capped the game for Frostburg with a goal in the closing seconds that brought the final deficit back to within three.
Sophomore Naomi Swann played an outstanding game in the cage for the Bobcats, stopping 15 shots. Brunett led the Bobcats with three goals while Dudley added two.
Eight different players scored for UMW. Catherine Kennedy led the way with three goals. Kathryn Stiltz made nine saves in goal, including seven in the second half to help keep FSU from getting any closer.
The Bobcats return to action on Monday with a game against Babson at Colorado College at 1:00 pm.
