CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Frostburg State University field hockey team came up just short in it's non-conference contest against Wilson. The Bobcats fell 3-2 to the Phoenix Thursday afternoon, despite a late game rally.
Box Score
Senior Rachel Merritt pulled the Bobcats (6-11) to within one goal with her fifth tally of the season at 60:44. FSU couldn't find the equalizer in the last ten minutes, despite two penalty corners in the last two minutes.
Maggie Sipps gave Wilson (8-5) an early lead at 10:12 but freshman Jackie Best quickly tied the game. Just a minute after Sipps' goal, senior Becky Randel found Best in front of the cage to knot the game at 1-1.
Less than five minutes before the half, the Phoenix took the lead back when Arissa Ward scored her first goal of the game. Ward would pick up where she left off in the first half and gave the hosts a 3-1 lead at 57:05 off a penalty stroke.
Merritt's goal at 60:44 cut the deficit to one, but the Bobcats couldn't mount the comeback.
Senior goalie Maggie Edwards made 15 stops in the contest while the Wilson goalie, Gina Weigold, needed just one save in the win.
The Bobcats return to the turf when they host Bethany on October 13 at 11:00 am. FSU will celebrate its seniors before the contest while hosting its "Stick it to Cancer" game.
