FSU Falls to Mary Washington; Eliminated from CAC Tournament

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Frostburg State University women’s lacrosse team was eliminated from the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament with a 19-7 setback to Mary Washington in the opening round, Sunday afternoon. The loss also ends the season for the Bobcats who finish 4-13 overall.

The sixth seeded Bobcats struck first against the third seeded Eagles (12-6). Junior Ali Kapustin (Columbia, Md./Marriots Ridge) scored off an assist from sophomore Taylor Cassatt (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) for the opening goal less than two minutes into action.

Mary Washington rebounded for five-straight goals, including two from Lauren Callison, over a 5:37 span for a 5-1 lead. FSU halted the run when senior Brittany Spencer (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) fed sophomore Chelsea Feeney (Damascus, Md./Damascus) for a score at 20:09.

UMW answered again with a game controlling 7-0 run behind two goals each from Addie Hawley and Jenna Petrucelli for a 12-2 lead.

Sophomore Rachel Dwyer (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) and freshman Malory Brunett (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) scored late in the half as FSU trailed 13-4 at the break. The Bobcats opened the second half as they did the first when Cassatt scored at 26:39 to further cut into the deficit.

However, Mary Washington answered again with a 5-0 run. Callison scored two more goals during the outburst and the Eagles led 18-5 with 11:50 left in regulation.

The tandem of Kapustin and Cassatt connected for a goal at 7:32 and Cassatt scored an unassisted tally at 3:05 as FSU trailed 18-7.

Mary Washington added an exclamation point to its afternoon with the game’s final goal for a 19-7 final.

Cassatt finished with two goals and two assists while Kapustin scored twice. Brunett contributed one goal and one assist. Freshman keeper Karoline Miller (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) made 15 saves, her fifth-straight game with 15 or more in a contest.

The Eagles attempted 41 shots, with 13 goals on 20 shots in the opening stanza. UMW was 5-of-7 on free-position shots and picked up 23 ground balls.

Nine different players had at least one point for Mary Washington. Catherine Kennedy led all players with four goals and two assists while Keller Torrey had two goals and five assists.

The Eagles advance to the league semifinals and will face second seeded Stevenson on Tuesday, April 19.
