Field Hockey Edged By Va. Wesleyan, 3-2

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Frostburg State field hockey team came close, but could not complete a comeback against Va. Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at the National Training Center in Virginia Beach. The Marlins held on for a 3-2 victory.

Box Score

Frostburg (3-9) opened the scoring when Erin Johns took a feed from Becky Randel and slipped one past Marlin keeper Kirsten Olson at 9:09. The Marlins were able to knot the score at 1-1 at 21:11 on a goal from Valerie Nowlan.

That would be all the scoring in the opening half. Va. Wesleyan led the Bobcats in shots in the first half, 7-3. Frostburg goalkeeper Maggie Edwards made four saves to keep the score tied headed into the intermission.

The field tipped against the Bobcats in the second half, though. The Marlins fired 10 shots to the Bobcats’ two, and they took the lead on an Allie Lanna tip-in at 55:21. Just under eight minutes later, Taylor Lober scored an unassisted goal to put Va. Wesleyan ahead, 3-1.

Although the Bobcats only managed two shots in the half, Rachel Merritt’s tip-in from Alli Elliott at 68:15 pulled the score to 3-2.  That would be as close as the Bobcats would come, however.

Randel led the team with two shots, both on goal. Edwards made nine stops on the afternoon.

Frostburg returns to Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday afternoon at Hood at 4:00 p.m.
