Women's Lacrosse Falls to Washington & Jefferson 9-8

FROSTBURG, Md. – Washington & Jefferson's Brittney Oake scored the game winning goal with just 41 seconds left on the clock to hand the Presidents a hard fought 9-8 win over the Frostburg State women's lacrosse team, Tuesday evening.

FSU (8-7) led W&J (11-3) in ground balls (25-22) and draw controls (14-5) while the teams held even in shots (21-21).

Brittany Fradkin scored the first four goals of the game as the Presidents took a 4-0 lead over the Bobcats with 15:39 left in the half. Less than three minutes later, Oake netted an unassisted goal to give W&J a five-point advantage, 5-0.

With 8:57 left in the half, junior Megan Dent-Carman (LaVale, Md./Mercersburg Academy) scored Frostburg State's first goal of the game and ended scoring going into the break at 5-1.

FSU came out strong in the second half netting six-consecutive goals over the first seven minutes of play to give the Bobcats a two-point lead over the Presidents, 7-5.

At 28:32, Dent-Carman scored her second goal of the game off a free position shot (5-2) while senior Elisabeth Hildebrand (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) scored her free position goal less than one minute later, 5-3. With 26:45 left in regulation, senior Ali Zinnel (Columbia, Md./Marriots Ridge) netted a goal off a free position to bring Frostburg State to within one of Washington & Jefferson, 5-4.

Just over two minutes later, Dent-Carman had her third and final goal of the game after being fed a pass from Hildebrand to tie the score at 5-5. At the 23:55 mark, Hildebrand found the net, 6-5, and sophomore Ali Kapustin (Columbia, Md./Marriots Ridge) scored a goal off an assist from Zinnel just over two minutes later to give a two-point advantage to FSU, 7-5.

Brittany Fradkin had her fifth goal of the game with 16:29 remaining on a free position shot, 7-6, but Kapustin scored less than a minute later after being fed a pass again from Zinnel to put the Bobcats up again by two goals, 8-6.

At 7:23, Courtney Schrock netted an unassisted goal to bring the score within one-point, 7-6, and less than two minutes later Kerri Nunnameaker scored her first goal of the game off a free position to tie the game for the second time at 8-8.

Oake scored her goal with 41 seconds left in regulation to give both the end score of 9-8 and the Presidents the win.

Dent-Carman recorded three goals in the loss while Hildebrand and Kapustin had two each. Leading scoring for W&J was Fradkin with five and Oake with two.

Sophomore goalie Tori Butts (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) posted seven saves and President goalkeeper Julie McLellan stopped nine shots.

FSU is back on at home against Division II Shepherd Saturday, April 24 at 1:00pm for senior day.
