DANVILLE, Va. – Senior Joe Garrity (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) went a perfect 5-for-5 as the Frostburg State baseball team battled back to take the first game of a three-game series against non-conference opponent, Old Westbury, 10-8, on Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats (3-2) put their first four runs on the board in the first inning starting off with a RBI single from junior Matt Greene (Westminster, Md./South Carroll (Hagerstown CC)) after senior Jeff Kroboth (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) got hit by a pitch to lead off and junior Daniel Heatwole (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby (Hagerstown CC)) walked to put two runners on. Garrity had his first hit of the game, a one-run double to bring home Heatwole. Sophomore Pat Sapp (Newark, Del./Caravel Academy) doubled to left field to clear the bases and give FSU the four-run lead.
Old Westbury (0-1) answered back in the top of the second scoring three runs off two hits. The Panthers first two batters of the inning were hit by a pitch and after a walk to load the bases, Giovanni Jimenez singled home the first run of the game for Old Westbury. Anthony Bevacqua hit a two-run single to score the final two runs of the inning. The Panthers were within one, 3-4, at the end of the inning.
Junior Britton Quayle (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park (Anne Arnudel CC)) came on in relief of senior Matt Ridenour (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown (Shepherd)) and pitched 4.0 strong innings. Ridenour stayed in the game as the designated hitter.
Kroboth led off the bottom of the fifth with a single down the left field line. Greene had his second hit of the game, driving home Kroboth with a RBI double to right center. Ridenour picked up his first hit of the game with a one-run single to center to score Greene. Garrity homered to left center for his third hit and third RBI. The Bobcats led the Panthers, 8-3, after five innings.
Old Westbury’s bats came alive in the top of the seventh scoring five runs to tie the ball game at eight a piece. The Panthers were able to manufacture runs on two sacrifice flies, an RBI single, one-run double and a throwing error by the Bobcats.
Garrity finished off his perfect game with the game-winning two-run single in the bottom of the eighth to put the Bobcats ahead for good, 10-8. The senior outfielder finished the game with five hits, two runs and five RBIs.
Senior Greg Beachy (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) got the win for the Bobcats pitching 1.1 innings. Sophomore #Zach O’Dell# (White Plains, Md./Henry E. Lackey) picked up the save for Frostburg State pitching a one-two-three ninth inning to shut down Old Westbury.
Greene finished the game 2-5 with two runs and two RBIs, while Ridenour was 2-5 with a run scored and a RBI.
The Bobcats are back in action in Danville, Va. on Sunday, Feb. 28 as they finish the three-game series with Old Westbury with a double-header starting at 12:00 pm.
