Field Hockey Defeated by York College, 3-1

FROSTBURG, Md. – Megan Spangler scored twice for York College as it defeated Frostburg State 3-1 in field hockey during a rainy game Saturday afternoon.

The loss handed the Bobcats (6-4) their second in a row and gave the Spartans (5-4) a four-game winning streak.

YCP came out shooting in the first half taking 14 of its 21 shots in the opening period, compared to just three shots for the Bobcats. York College struck first on goal when Katie Dawkins scored on a penalty shot at 12:45. Megan Spangler scored with just one minute to go in the half to make the score 2-0 for the Spartans.

The second half was dominated by the defense of both teams. Frostburg State defense allowed only seven shots while its offense was able to get off 4.

The Bobcats' offense was led by juniors Lindsey Frost (Columbia, Md./Hammond) and Breanne Russell (Clements, Md./Chopticon). Frost led with three shots, one on goal, while Russell added two shots, both on goal, with one reaching the back of the net for the Bobcats to bring the score to 1-2.

Spangler netted her last goal of the game for the Spartans with just seven seconds left off an assist from Katie Dawkins.

YCP keeper Claire Rekitzke made two saves and allowed one goal, while FSU's Maggie Edwards (Lebanon, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) allowed three goals and stopped 11 shots in the loss.

Frostburg State returns to the field on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 4:00 pm when it travels to Huntingdon, Pa to take on Juniata.
