Baseball Pounces on the Gators

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team broke out of its offensive funk to explode for 21 hits and 18 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Allegheny (Pa.) by scores of 11-3 and 7-1, Sunday afternoon.

The Bobcats (4-6) scored in each inning of game one topped off by a six-run second inning where sophomores Timothy Sutcliffe (Lansdale, Pa./christopher Dock) and Ben Oberman (Loganville, Ga./Loganville) each had singles that drove in two RBI's.

After FSU jumped out to an 11-0 lead on the back of junior pitcher Greg Beachy (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) the Gators (1-3) rallied for back-to-back hits, which led to three late runs. Sophomore Jonathon Sally (Rockville, Md./Magruder) came on to retire AC in the seventh and preserve the win.

Junior Jeff Kroboth (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) led Frostburg State at the plate with a 2-for-3 game, as well as, driving in three RBI's and scoring two runs himself.

In game two, sophomore Trevor Conner (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia/Kent School) pitched a gem as he went the complete game in his first start of the season. Conner allowed just three hits and one run, while striking out six batters.

Freshman Pat Sapp (Newark, Del./Caravel Academy) and Sutcliffe vaulted the Bobcats ahead in the third inning as each had an RBI. Sapp ended the afternoon 1-for-1 with two RBI's, a run scored and two walks.

Sutcliffe then struck again in the fifth inning when he belted a grand-slam over the left-center fence to bring his RBI total on the day to five, while handing FSU the 7-1 lead it wouldn't surrender.

Sophomore Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) and Kroboth both joined Sutcliffe in game two with two hits each.

The Bobcats return to the field on Tuesday, March 10 as they travel to Mary Washington for a 3:00 pm contest.
