BOX SCORE
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Frostburg State baseball team had its ninth-inning rally fall short with the tying run on second base as Mary Washington held on for a 5-4 victory, Tuesday afternoon.
The Eagles (4-6) scored the first two runs of the game off Bobcat (4-7) starter
David Lanier (Laurel, Md./Atholton) in the third inning. FSU responded in the fourth inning as senior
Teon Richburg (Baltimore, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) hammered a double to centerfield to score sophomore
Timothy Sutcliffe (Lansdale, Pa./Christopher Dock). Sutcliffe reached base to lead of the inning by being hit by a pitch.
The Bobcats then tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth inning this time with Sutcliffe recording the RBI on a single to leftfield that drove home junior
Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick).
UMW's bats found life in the bottom of the seventh as five consecutive batters reached base off freshman reliever Zach O'Dell (White Plains, Md./Henry E. Lackey) to break out to a 5-2 lead.
Frostburg State used a walk to Derr and a
Jeff Kroboth (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) double in the top of the ninth to begin its comeback. Freshman
Pat Sapp (Newark, Del./Caravel Academy) drove home Derr with a ground ball to shortstop, while Sutcliffe brought the score to 5-4 with a single up the middle to plate Kroboth.
After Mary Washington brought in reliever Eric Rehbein it looked as though FSU had found it groove just in time as Richburg drove Rehbein's first pitch through the infield to get the tying run in scoring position. Rehbein then rained on the Bobcats parade as he was able to get junior designated hitter
Joe Garrity (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) to fly out to rightfield with the final score set at 5-4.
O'Dell suffered the loss for FSU as Chris Anderson picked up the win for the Eagle after pitching 8.2 innings and recording seven strikeouts.
Sutcliffe led Frostburg State at the plate with a 2-for-4 afternoon, while driving in two RBI's and scoring a run himself.
FSU returns to action on Thursday, March 12 when they visit Lebanon Valley for a 3:30 pm game.
