ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Frostburg State men's lacrosse team dropped a road game to East Coast Conference opponent Roberts Wesleyan by a 9-8 final.
Despite losing the opening face-off, FSU was able to take an early lead following an RWU turnover, with junior Luke Roach putting the first goal on the board in the third minute of play. Roberts would respond quickly, netting a pair of goals 90 seconds apart to go up 2-1. Junior Lukasz Barmosz made a save in net to prevent further damage, then sophomore Brody Monroe caused a turnover, leading to classmate Jack Laye tying the game at the other end. Both sides struggled to keep possession, combining for five turnovers in the next five minutes, as FSU would be the ones to capitalize on a failed clear, going up 3-2 on a solo goal from senior Hayden McCullough. In the final three minutes, both netminders made saves to keep it a one-goal game going to the second.
The Redhawks came out in dominant fashion to start the second, scoring twice in the first three minutes to regain the lead 4-3. Frostburg wasn't able to hold onto the ball, turning the ball over three times in eight minutes without getting a shot away, however RWU wasn't able to capitalize, as none of their efforts were on target. Senior Matt Williams got FSU going with a caused turnover, as junior Chase Kelly picked up the loose ball and led Laye to find junior Hayden Celio to tie things at four. Roberts controlled the last four minutes of the frame, as a holding penalty allowed the hosts to net a man-up goal, then they doubled their advantage a minute and a half later to head into the break up 6-4.
Both goalkeepers made a save each in the first five minutes of the third, as turnovers continued to stifle each offense. Barmosz produced two more stops over the next two minutes, as juniors Ryder Walter and Henry Sykes each caused turnovers to help keep RWU at bay. The Bobcat resistance finally broke with three minutes to go, with two goals within 45 seconds gave the Redhawks an 8-4 advantage.
With the sides again trading possession of the ball to start the fourth, Roach would find his second goal of the day after two and a half minutes to help in the Frostburg comeback effort. The momentum didn't last long, as a one-minute penalty would result in Roberts taking advantage of a man-up situation, stretching the lead back to four. Barmosz ensured that the lead wouldn't extend further with a save, as Roach would again find the net for his hat trick and a 9-6 score with nine minutes to go. Through the next three minutes, FSU controlled the shot attempts but could only put one on target, which was saved, as Barmosz denied another Redhawks shot. Graduate Tyrin Long got the Bobcats closer with a solo effort, as four more efforts missed the mark through the next two minutes. With just over a minute and a half to go, Celio picked up a groundball and fired home, cutting the deficit all the way back down to one. FSU wasn't able to get any solid possession for the final minute, as a turnover allowed RWU to hold onto the ball and escape with the 9-8 win.
Roach led the offense with his three goals, while Ryder had a standout day defensively, causing four turnovers and picking up 10 groundballs.
With the loss, the Bobcats now sit at 9-5 on the season, while Roberts Wesleyan improves to 4-6. Frostburg will next host Seton Hill in Bobcat Stadium on Wednesday, April 15 for a 6 PM start. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
