FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team fell at home 10-6 to No. 6 Seton Hill on Wednesday evening.
FSU opened the game by winning the first face-off, as junior Henry Sykes fired off the first shot, which was saved by SHU keeper Will Cody. Junior Kieran Hofgesang then caused a turnover to get the Bobcats the ball back, as graduate Tyrin Long was the first to react to a blocked shot, picking up the loose ball and putting it past Cody for the first score. Off another Frostburg win in the X, junior Hayden Celio was denied by Cody, then junior Lukasz Barmosz was called into action for the first time on a stop. With possession of the ball, FSU wasn't able to tack on another score, as junior Luke Roach put a shot high and had another saved by Cody.
At the other end, the Griffins got themselves going in swift fashion, as Nate Herbster netted a pair of solo goals just 40 seconds apart for a 2-1 lead. Out of an SHU face-off, senior Matt Williams caused a turnover, as Sykes put two shots together, one wide and another into Cody's net. Seton Hill had a trio of efforts go off target before finding the back of the net with just under four minutes left in the period. Following a face-off violation by the visitors, senior Sean Mullineaux made his way around the back of the cage, sneaking a shot past Cody for a 3-2 score. Both sides had a turnover late on, as Barmosz made another stop to end the frame down by a goal.
Cody helped his team get some momentum at the start of the second on a save that immediately led to a transition goal. Sophomore Payton Dean won the resulting FO, as in quick succession, freshman Keegan Green fired a cross-goal pass to Mullineaux to get back within one. The Bobcats were unable to take advantage of a man-up penalty, with Cody denying Mullineaux and Sykes sending a shot high.
Both teams struggled to keep hold of the ball, combining for eight turnovers in a five-minute span, as junior Ryder Walter caused one that allowed Mullineaux to find junior Jack Hooks to rip from the left side for a 4-4 tie. Each goaltender stepped up twice in the next three minutes, as eventually Mullineaux somehow was able to scoop a loose ball low into the goal to put FSU ahead 5-4. Walter had another CT in limiting the Griffins' possessions, as they put a shot wide before a last-second effort wasn't able to beat the buzzer, going into the half down one.
Seton Hill's defense stepped things up coming out of the break, causing a quick turnover and putting home a solo goal within the first 90 seconds to even the score. Green, Sykes, and sophomore Jackson Kanzler then all put shots wide, unable to test Cody. The Griffins took full advantage midway through the period, putting home back-to-back goals just 30 seconds apart to take their lead up to 7-5. At the other end, Frostburg was denied by a combination of the post and Cody, then turned the ball over with a chance on a man-up advantage. The remainder of the frame would feature just one off-target effort and a trio of turnovers to go into the fourth with SHU up by two.
Opening the final period with a face-off win, a Bobcat penalty helped the Griffins take their lead up to 8-5. FSU was able to find a quick response, as Roach found Celio on the right side to get back within two, but Seton Hill was right there to halt momentum, taking things to 9-6 all within three minutes. After trading turnovers, Barmosz made a pair of saves either side of one by Cody, as yet another Frostburg penalty resulted in a man-up Griffin score for a four-goal advantage. A combination of Cody and turnovers kept the Bobcat offense at bay, as they managed just two shots on target the rest of the game, leading to the 10-6 final.
Mullineaux drove the offense with three goals and an assist, while Walter and Williams combined for five caused turnovers and nine groundballs.
With the loss, Frostburg drops to 9-6 on the year, while Seton Hill improves to 12-2. FSU now will have over a week's break before returning home to face District of Columbia on Saturday, April 25 for senior day. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
