Haney, Russell, Burrows, Stone Score Hat Tricks in WLAX Win Over Wheeling

WHEELING, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team picked up their fifth consecutive victory with a 21-7 decision on the road against Wheeling Wednesday afternoon.

Despite the Cardinals taking the opening draw, senior Daniella Boss caused a turnover to get FSU their first possession, then following a save, junior Maya Mosslih had a CT that led to freshman Avery O'Hara netting the opener just over a minute in. Over the next five minutes, WU had a spell on attack that was ended twice by sophomore Liz Amos, first on a caused turnover and then on a save. Boss was then denied by the post, as was senior Sydney Stone by keeper Giavonna Perkins before Amos matched at the other end.

FSU began to get things going from that point, as Stone received an assist from senior Emily Lamoreaux before junior Gianna Leonardi drew a save from Perkins before scoring a solo effort to lead 3-0. Following a good clear by Wheeling, senior Julia Mangini prevented the hosts from getting on the board with a CT, as Stone converted her second goal off a high rebound, then just 10 seconds later, O'Hara passed to freshman Maddie Russell for a five-goal advantage. WU finally got themselves on the board after 11 minutes, but in quick response, O'Hara nabbed the draw as senior Neila Haney went on a solo run to bring the game to 6-1. Haney and freshman Lauren Kunes then each drew a save from Perkins, with the former also hitting the post before Russell was able to convert a free position to end the first period up 7-1.

The Bobcats got out to a fast start in the second frame, as Russell and Burrows each netted goals within the first two minutes to go up by eight. Through the next four minutes, the only shot came off Perkins stopping a free position, as the Cardinals netted their second of the day in transition. Sophomore Kam Lee then prevented Wheeling from getting momentum through a caused turnover, as Haney put home an 8-meter chance to reach double figures.

Amos and Lee then both ended WU possessions, as Haney turned provider to Boss and Russell on quickfire goals to lead 12-2. Following a Frostburg turnover, the Cardinals put home their third but Stone completed her hat trick to maintain a 10-goal lead. WU controlled the final three minutes, putting efforts high and wide before finding the back of the cage, as Amos made a late save to take things into the half at 13-4.

Wheeling continued their late momentum into the third quarter, scoring within the first minute to pull within eight. Both teams traded turnovers, as an Amos stop led to Haney getting up-field and firing home. FSU began to take full control, as within the next three minutes, Russell and Burrows each netted free position goals, with the latter also being found by Haney to bring the lead to 17-5. Over the final five minutes, Lee caused another turnover while Amos picked up a save, however the Bobcats couldn't get a shot on target, leading to WU scoring the final goal of the period for a 17-6 score.

Perkins made an early stop in the final frame, as did freshman Kiera Pieper, taking over in net for Amos. Frostburg put home back-to-back scores 90 seconds apart, with Leonardi and freshman Chloe Zeruto scoring. Wheeling put in their seventh of the day with just over eight minutes remaining, as Pieper ensured they wouldn't be able to get two straight on another stop. Haney was able to find Zeruto for the latter's second, as turnovers plagued much of the remainder of the game, however Haney still got one last effort to go in, taking the final to 21-7.

Haney netted a game-high nine points on four goals and five assists, while Russell scored a career-high five goals while Burrows and Stone netted hat tricks. Lee drove the defensive effort with three caused turnovers, as Boss showed up all over the field with a pair of CT's, three groundballs, and six draw controls.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 9-2 on the year, while Wheeling drops to 5-6. FSU will next return home to face Point Park on Saturday, April 4 where it will be senior day, with festivities set to begin at 3:45 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
