Women's Lacrosse Take's 22-Goal Senior Day Win Over Point Park

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team took down Point Park 24-2 in their Saturday afternoon Senior Day.

Prior to the game, FSU honored its 10 seniors in Jessie Bare, Sydney Stone, Neila Haney, Caylee Markle, Izzy Kelly, Julia Mangini, Emily Lamoreaux, Kylie Brigerman, Sara Weingarden, and Daniella Boss.

The Bobcats started the game immediately on the front foot, as freshman Delaney Burrows hit the crossbar before Lamoreaux drew a save from Isabella LaVenice in goal. After junior Maya Mosslih picked up a loose pass at midfield, Haney netted the opening goal two minutes in. Boss took the resulting draw, as Lamoreaux had an effort blocked while Burrows was denied by LaVenice before Haney found Boss for a 2-0 lead. PPU got their first look at goal after an FSU turnover, but sophomore Liz Amos thwarted a free position shot that paved the way for some offensive power. Brigerman started things off on a solo run, with Burrows following suit before turning provider to Haney, increasing the advantage up to five within a minute spell.

Looking to get back into the game, Point Park got the next draw and sent a pair of efforts wide, however a turnover and green card halted their momentum. Through the next two and a half minutes, freshman Avery O'Hara scored on back-to-back possessions with assists from Haney and Burrows, as the former added another on a feed from Brigerman after Amos made her second save for an 8-0 score. Amos stood tall in goal once again in keeping PPU off the board, then Kelly caused a turnover which led to Haney finding freshman Lauren Kunes from the right side and making it nine unanswered. The Pioneers were finally able to get a foothold, as a Bobcat yellow card allowed for a woman-up goal with just under 30 seconds left, taking the score to 9-1.

Both sides struggled to keep hold of the ball to start the second period, with Mosslih causing a turnover and Amos making a save to keep Point Park at bay. A yellow card against PPU then allowed Haney to find Stone running towards goal three minutes into the frame. More turnovers kept the offenses quiet through the next four minutes, as Amos put another stop on the board before Frostburg found their offensive swagger again. In a two and a half minute spell, Haney provided a pair of goals on assists from junior Gianna Leonardi either side of Stone receiving a pass from Brigerman for a 13-1 score. Kelly helped ensure Point Park get a shot away in the final five minutes with another CT, as Leonardi called her own number before freshman Maddie Russell netted a low-shot free position to go into the half up 15-1.

FSU opened the third with Boss netting another DC, as Burrows fired home just over a minute in. The Pioneers failed to get out of their own half, thanks to Mosslih intercepting a pass and keeping hold of the ball, charging in on goal to score her second of the season. Amos continued to impress with another free position stop, as Lamoreaux and Kelly helped her out defensively with caused turnovers. Seven minutes into the period, Lamoreaux put in her first of the day, then Brigerman forced a turnover that led to O'Hara firing home for a 19-1 lead. Over the final six minutes, Amos prevented a Point Park score with back-to-back saves, as O'Hara caused a turnover to get possession back, eventually finding Haney for a 19-goal lead at the end of three.

PPU was able to get some momentum to start the final quarter, forcing freshman Kiera Pieper into a save before taking advantage of two FSU turnovers for their second goal of the day. Pieper ensured that she wouldn't get beat again, making a stop that led to three Bobcat goals in a four-minute span. Leonardi went for back-to-back scores on assists from Haney and Russell, then Lamoreaux put in her second that also served as her 100th career point. Continuing to impress defensively, Haney, Mangini, and Weingarden all caused Pioneer turnovers through the final five minutes, as Kunes ended the scoring with Haney assisting for the 24-2 final.

Haney drove the offense by tying her career-high with 12 points on six goals and assists, with Leonardi and O'Hara both netting hat tricks. Kelly led the defensive effort with six caused turnovers, as Amos and Pieper combined for 10 saves against just two goals allowed.

With the victory, Frostburg improves to 10-2 on the year, while Point Park drops to 4-8. FSU will be back on the road Thursday, April 9 to face Charleston (WV) at 4 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
