Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Dominant Second Quarter Paves Way for Men's Lacrosse Victory Over Malone

CANTON, Ohio – The Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team won in convincing fashion 24-2 on the road against Malone on Thursday afternoon.

Within the first minute of the game, freshman Ayden Viscount won the opening face-off as sophomore Brody Monroe picked up the groundball, leading to junior Luke Roach scoring a solo goal. After both sides traded turnovers, junior Jack Smith made a save in net before junior Kieran Hofgesang caused a turnover that led to Roach netting his second off a feed from junior Henry Sykes. Two minutes later, the Pioneers were able to take the face-off while FSU was given a penalty, giving the hosts a man-up goal and a 2-1 score.

Over the next six minutes, both sides struggled to put shots on target, with Viscount drawing the only save before junior Hayden Celio provided a pair of assists in a 90-second span to senior Sean Mullineaux and Roach, extending the lead out to 4-1. Viscount won another at the X but was denied once more from the MU keeper, however junior Josh High got the Bobcats the ball back, with classmate Logan Yost finding the back of the cage for a 5-1 advantage at the end of the frame.

Frostburg began to ramp up their offense coming out in the second period, scoring five times in the first six minutes. Roach put home his fourth of the day followed immediately by Viscount firing his first, as well as graduate Tyrin Long. A Malone turnover allowed junior Ryder Walter to find Monroe in transition, then Viscount doubled his count with another face-off win and a 10-1 lead.

Two minutes later, FSU was whistled for another penalty, but Hofgesang picked up another CT to fend the Pioneers off, as Sykes and Long went for back-to-back solo efforts and an 11-goal margin. MU struggled to get going offensively, as senior Will Stephanos was the next to force a turnover, with freshman Keegan Green passing to junior Baylor Davis for a score. In the final three minutes, Stephanos and seniors Matt Williams and Robbie Peters each caused a turnover, while sophomore Jack Laye netted his first goal of the year and Celio took advantage of a Mullineaux pass to lead 15-1 at the half.

Neither side managed a shot on target through the first five minutes of the third period, though Frostburg would get right back to their attack on Yost's second of the day and Hofgesang assisting freshman Alex Tyler to go up by 16. Mullineaux and Green followed with another pair of back-to-back strikes a minute apart, then the Pioneers broke their scoring drought to end the quarter down 19-2.

Yost began the fourth by completing his hat trick, with Tyler following on a Laye feed three minutes later. FSU continued to give the MU offense fits, with another pair of caused turnovers leading to Long putting home a solo effort. With just under five to go, junior Wyatt Dooley and sophomore Daimon Spriggs each found the back of the cage, putting the final score at 24-2.

Roach led the attack with four goals on the day, while Long and Yost both added three apiece. Walter provided the lead defensively with three caused turnovers and five groundballs, while Viscount won 15-of-17 face-offs while adding eight GB's.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 3-3 on the year, while Malone drops to 0-6. The Bobcats will return home to face Bentley on Wednesday, March 11 at 6 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
