Defense Steps Up in Men's Lacrosse Upset Victory Over #12 Falcons

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team secured a stunning 11-7 victory over No. 12 Bentley at home on Wednesday night.

After late afternoon storms delayed the start of the game, FSU came out strong defensively, as junior Jack Smith made an early save while senior Matt Williams and sophomore Brody Monroe each came up with a caused turnover. Just under five minutes in, junior Luke Roach passed to classmate Hayden Celio for a turnaround shot and score and an early lead. With BU winning the resulting face-off, sophomore Daimon Spriggs got Frostburg the ball back, as Celio netted his second of the day on a feed from senior Graham Allison.

Smith continued to keep the Falcons off the board with a save off the face-off, then helped Frostburg stave off a man-down penalty with another stop. Both sides traded turnovers on a pair of possessions, with FSU able to take advantage on Roach circling the goal and firing home a 3-0 lead with just under five minutes left in the frame. As time ticked down, each team again struggled to keep hold of the ball, as a late Bentley clear resulting in them being able to score a buzzer-beating goal to get within 3-1.

BU ran that momentum into the start of the second quarter, winning at the X and netting within a minute to close the deficit to one. Smith stood firm on a pair of efforts to keep his team in the lead, then after a Falcon penalty, Celio saw his hat trick effort denied by Ryan Bordiere. As Bentley tried to clear the ball, junior Ryder Walter stole the ball away and quickly saw Bordiere out of his goal, shooting a bouncing ball from 40 yards out and finding the back of the cage to lead 4-2.

Senior Hayden McCullough was the next Bobcat to force a turnover, as Celio peppered the BU goal with another pair of shots. Out of a failed Bentley clear, junior Logan Yost netted a solo goal to push the advantage out to three. The Falcons continued to cause themselves problems, as they turned the ball over by going offsides on a clear before being called for a holding penalty, as Sykes passed to Roach for a man-up goal and a 6-2 score with just under four minutes to go in the half. FSU tried to push their advantage out further late on, but graduate Tyrin Long and Sykes were each denied by Bordiere as the clock hit zeros.

Walter and freshman Ayden Viscount ensured that BU wouldn't be able to take much momentum and dent the lead in the start of the third, each causing a turnover before senior Sean Mullineaux found Roach to rip one in for a 7-2 advantage. With another Bentley face-off win, they still couldn't find a way past Smith in net, as a pushing penalty then allowed Celio to find Mullineaux in front of goal, going low past Bordiere for a six-goal margin. Neither team managed a shot on target for the next four minutes, as another TO from the visitors would allow Celio to net a solo score to complete his hat trick. 90 seconds later, Frostburg was whistled for a slashing penalty, as the Falcons were finally able to take advantage and break their goal drought. Over the final five minutes of the period, both netminders made saves while a pair of efforts went wide and another two were blocked, taking the contest into the fourth with a 9-3 score.

Bentley kicked things up a notch to start the final frame, causing a failed Bobcat clear and scoring within the first two minutes. After an FSU shot went wide and another was stopped by Bordiere, a slashing call led to a man-up goal for the Falcons to get within 9-5 after six minutes. Smith kept BU out with a pair of saves over the next two minutes, but three consecutive Frostburg turnovers allowed the visitors to net their third of the period and bring the deficit down to three.

Throughout the next three minutes, the only stats of note were penalties and turnovers, as the Bobcats sought to use the clock to their advantage. With just under two minutes to go, freshman Keegan Green called his own number to help put the game on ice, while sophomore Jack Laye evaded some Bentley pressure to hit an empty net and a comfortable five-goal lead. BU netted a goal with 39 seconds left on the clock and tried to stage some late magic but their final two efforts were wide and blocked, as FSU secured the 11-7 upset victory.

Celio and Roach led the attack with three goals and an assist each, while Walter drove the defensive effort on four caused turnovers and three groundballs. Smith made eight saves in net out of fifteen on target to earn the win.

With the result, Frostburg improves to 4-3 on the year, while Bentley drops to 2-2. FSU will be back at home on Saturday, March 14 to face another ranked opponent in No. 14 Mercy at 1 p.m. for their ECC opener. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
