FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team took down Shepherd 17-7 in their 2026 home opener on Wednesday evening.
Â
SU opened the game by taking the first draw control but junior Maya Mosslih immediately got FSU the ball with a caused turnover, leading to freshman Avery O'Hara finding the back of the net. Senior Neila Haney then nabbed the resulting DC, as she took advantage of O'Hara's assist before the Rams got on the board 30 seconds later for a 2-1 score. Both sides had great chances to score over the next seven minutes but couldn't take advantage of them, as Haney put a shot off the top of the crossbar and was denied by Shepherd keeper Bailey Terry, as were O'Hara and freshmen Delaney Burrows and Maddie Russell.
Â
Sophomore Liz Amos made a stop in net and was helped out defensively by a pair of caused turnovers from classmate Kam Lee and Mosslih, with the latter's paving the way to Haney finding Russell in front of goal for a 3-1 lead. Mosslih continued to thwart SU's offense, with another CT followed by a green card allowing O'Hara to assist senior Daniella Boss. The Bobcats continued to pepper Shepherd's goal through the final three minutes, as freshman Caitlyn Marsicano drew a save from Terry and hit the post before passing to Haney to score, as the latter turned provider to O'Hara for a woman-up goal to end the first with a 6-1 advantage.
Â
The Rams began the second period with the ball after holding possession at the end of the first and were rewarded with a goal 40 seconds into the period. After the sides traded turnovers, senior Emily Lamoreaux forced an SU mistake that led to Russell passing to Boss for a five-goal lead. In flipping the script, Shepherd was able to get possession in Bobcat territory before another pair of turnovers from each side resulted in senior Izzy Kelly picking up a CT, Burrows getting the groundball, and junior Gianna Leonardi passing to a cutting Haney for an 8-3 score.
Â
Amos produced another save to keep the Rams off the board, while Kelly and Haney forced another pair of TO's, the latter doing all her own work after picking the ball up at midfield and charging towards goal to fire home. Neither side managed another score in the final four minutes of the half, as Amos made a last-second stop to go into the break up 9-3.
Â
Picking up right where she left off, the Fairmont native native made another save to open the third, however a pair of FSU green cards allowed Shepherd to net a woman-up goal. Frostburg regained some composure as Mosslih earned another CT and groundball, as O'Hara, Lamoreaux, and Haney went for three consecutive scores while Amos stopped an SU free position shot to lead 12-4.
Â
The Rams were able to get one back on a solo effort from Grace Lyon but the Bobcats countered right away with Haney passing to senior Sydney Stone for her first goal of the year, then Kelly's defensive qualities shone through in O'Hara finding Haney for a nine-goal advantage. Amos stopped Lyon in front of goal while Lee came up with a caused turnover, as Boss found Russell to go up 15-5 at the end of the frame.
Â
Still looking to pile on the offense, Haney and Marsicano netted back-to-back solo efforts to start the fourth, putting FSU up by 12 after two minutes. Both sides were plagued by turnovers over the next five minutes, as a lost ball at midfield led to Shepherd scoring in transition. Freshman goalkeeper Kiera Pieper came on in place of Amos and didn't miss a beat, producing a save while Frostburg was denied twice at the other end. With just over a minute to go, the Rams put home the final score of the game, but Pieper made a pair of late stops to preserve the 17-7 victory.
Â
Haney was a force offensively, netting seven goals to go with three assists for 10 total points, while also grabbing a game-high 12 draw controls. O'Hara added a trio of goals and assists for six points, while Mosslih drove the defensive effort on a career-high five caused turnovers and four groundballs.
Â
With the win, Frostburg improves to 2-1 on the year, while Shepherd drops to 1-2. FSU will be back at home on Saturday, March 7 to face Shippensburg at 12 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
