FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team survived a second half comeback bid by Shippensburg to win 11-10 at home Saturday afternoon.
Â
Freshman Avery O'Hara took the opening draw for FSU, then after a pair of shots went wide, she was able to net the game's first goal just over a minute in. Neither side could make the most of their next pair of possessions, as an offside against the Bobcats allowed SU to net a woman-up goal, then the visitors doubled over less than a minute later to lead 2-1 at the midway point of the period. Sophomore Liz Amos then traded saves with Raider keeper Izzy Sawicki, as a failed clear by the visitors led to O'Hara netting her second of the day. Over the final five minutes, both teams were plagued by turnovers, as senior Neila Haney came closest to scoring with her shot coming back off the post for a 2-2 tie after one.
Â
Frostburg had trouble keeping hold of the ball to start the second, as their first two possessions ended in turnovers, while Shippensburg converted a free position goal to lead by one. Less than a minute later, O'Hara came up with another DC and powered in her hat trick to tie things once more. Through the next four and a half minutes, FSU's defense stepped up, as Amos made a pair of stops in net while junior Maya Mosslih caused a turnover, then freshman Delaney Burrows passed out in front to O'Hara to net hers and the Bobcats' fourth goal.
Â
Senior Emily Lamoreaux tried to add on by getting the DC and firing away but saw her shot saved, as SU was again able to take advantage of a Frostburg penalty to even things at 4-4 with just over five minutes to go in the half. The Raiders looked to continue their momentum by earning the next draw but senior Izzy Kelly got FSU the ball back, leading to Haney scoring on a free position and followed immediately by Burrows being found by freshman Maddie Russell for back-to-back scores. Shippensburg then was denied by the post as Mosslih nabbed the loose ball that eventually led to Haney hitting a solo effort to lead 7-4 at the break.
Â
The Raiders came out with renewed energy to begin the second half, as they kept Frostburg off the board for nearly the entire frame. A pair of Bobcat turnovers paved the way for an SU score, as Amos made a trio of saves in trying to keep the visitors out through the first six minutes. Shippensburg wouldn't be denied further, as they hit three goals in a two-minute stretch to stun the home crowd with an 8-7 lead. Sawicki ensured that FSU wouldn't get on the board with another save, as the Raiders hit their fifth of the quarter with just over three minutes left to go up by two. Frostburg finally was able to shake their rust off in the final 80 seconds, as Russell fed junior Gianna Leonardi for a much-needed goal, then Haney was stopped by Sawicki but Burrows was first to the ball, quickly firing home to tie things 9-9 to end the period.
Â
Frostburg continued their momentum into the fourth, as Haney and Burrows provided assists to senior Daniella Boss and O'Hara for back-to-back scores and an 11-9 advantage. Amos prevented another pair of SU goals, with Sawicki matching at the other end as the defenses took control for the next 10 minutes. Out of a Bobcat turnover and green card, it took just 20 seconds for Shippensburg to get within one with just under four minutes to go. On a Raiders green card, O'Hara tried to net an insurance goal from a free position but shot wide, giving the visitors possession with a chance to tie. Working over to the right side, Amos stood tall to thwart the next SU shot, as FSU was able to run down the clock to secure the 11-10 victory.
Â
O'Hara led the attack with a career-high five goals, with Burrows and Haney each adding a pair and the latter grabbing a game-high five draw controls. Amos made 10 saves in net to go with a career-high four groundballs, as Kelly helped the defensive effort with a pair of caused turnovers and a game-high six GB's.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 3-1 on the year, while Shippensburg drops to 3-2. FSU will return to action on the road against nationally-ranked Seton Hill on Wednesday, March 11 at 4 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
