Layhew, Powerful Offense Drive Baseball to Win Over Lock Haven and Undefeated Weekend

NUTTER FORT, W. Va. — The Frostburg State Baseball team won in seven innings against Lock Haven in an 11-1 on Sunday morning, completing their unbeaten weekend in West Virginia.

The Bobcats sent out sophomore Hunter Layhew to the mound, who got himself out of a first-inning jam after a Lock Haven single and a wild pitch, getting the third out with a fly ball to right. FSU also was unable to capitalize in getting runners on base, leaving a pair on after a walk and an error. Both offenses were relatively quiet in the second, then in the third, the Bald Eagles threatened once again, leading things off with a hit by pitch followed by a hit and a walk to load the bases, however, no runs would come across, as Layhew got a strikeout and a grounder to end the half inning.

As the Frostburg offense came up to bat in the bottom of the third, freshman Anthony Savino led things off by legging out a grounder to short for an infield single, then juniors Brian Scott and Jackson Shalick followed with walks. With the bases full, senior Jake Holler stepped into the box and singled to the right side, moving everyone up a base and scoring Savino, then junior Logan Helser belted one to left for a double, scoring Scott and Shalick to take a 3-0 lead.

Layhew then worked a 1-2-3 fourth with a pair of strikeouts and a fly out, bringing Frostburg back up to bat in the fourth. Picking up right where they left off, Savino drew a one-out walk and then freshman Drew Jourdan executed a perfect hit-and-run, driving a grounder past second, and Savino was able to reach third. Continuing to succeed in some small ball, Scott laid down a sacrifice bunt, scoring Savino before Shalick drove a pitch over the wall in left-center for a two-run homer, giving the Bobcats a 6-0 lead after four.

In the fifth, Layhew had some traffic on the base paths with a single up the middle and a walk, but he helped himself out with a pick-off at third, then worked a backwards K and a fly out to left to keep the shutout going. The FSU bats went quiet in the fifth, as LHU was able to use some small ball to put a run on junior reliever Branden Brown. A single and error started the inning, then a sac bunt put both runners in scoring position. Brown was able to get a strikeout swinging before a wild pitch brought a run across, however he got a grounder to third to prevent further damage.

Both teams went down without much action in their next at-bats, as sophomore Kamden Sowers came in for Brown, pitching a 1-2-3 frame in the seventh. The Bobcats came up in the bottom half with Shalick leading off with a double before Holler walked, then they both advanced on a wild pitch. Freshman pinch hitter Will Mollman stepped in and skied one to right for a sac fly, scoring Shalick, then sophomore Zane Bohn lined a double to score Holler, increasing their lead to 8-1. A pitching change for Lock Haven didn't shake Frostburg at all, as sophomore Manny Hall drew a four-pitch walk before he and Bohn produced a double steal, putting both runners in scoring position. Back-to-back RBI fielders' choices from sophomore Sam Atkinson and Savino brought both home, as Jourdan walked and Scott doubled to left, pushing Savino across and allowing FSU to win things in seven innings with an 11-1 mercy rule score.

Shalick led things on offense, going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and RBI while also scoring three runs. Scott and Helser both had two RBIs on the day, each recording a hit. On the mound, Layhew pitched five innings, allowing no runs on three hits and two walks whlie striking out eight. Brown and Sowers each went one inning, combining for one run on one hit and a pair of K's.

With the win, the Bobcats improve to 7-2 as the Bald Eagles fall to 1-6 on the year. FSU will return to the field next Friday, March 6 in Olney, Md, as they face Georgian Court at 1 pm. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
