HANOVER, Md. – The Frostburg State Baseball team dropped their opening two games of the weekend to West Chester 5-0 and 6-0 on Saturday night.
Â
In game one, both teams went down in order through the first inning before the Golden Rams were able to get a lead in the second. After a strikeout looking, a double into left was followed by another K, however a triple to straightaway center gave WCU a 1-0 advantage. FSU had trouble getting their bats going, as Golden Ram starter Julian Costa sat them down 1-2-3 in both the second and third innings.
Â
West Chester looked to tack on in the fourth, working a pair of walks and a single to load the bases with two outs, but sophomore Zach Dodson worked out of the jam with a grounder to third to keep the deficit at one. The Bobcats again went quietly in the bottom half, as in the fifth, the Golden Rams did complete their two-out rally through a triple, walk, and wild pitch to lead 2-0.
Â
Frostburg wouldn't get a runner on base until the bottom of the sixth, when junior Ryan Bouma drew a walk, but he would advance no further after a pair of strikeouts and a pop up. WCU effectively put the game away win the seventh, with a pair of doubles, a single, and a stolen base that involved an error all playing three runs and putting them ahead 5-0. Juniors Brian Scott and Jackson Schalick drew back-to-back walks to lead off the bottom half hoping to provide some late magic, however a liner caught in left and another two swinging strikeouts gave Costa the West Chester no-hitter and shutout win.
Â
Both sides went down in order to start game two, as junior starter John Smith was then able to work out of some trouble in the second. A pair of walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with one out, however he was able to get a much-needed 4-6-3 double play to get out of the frame unscathed. FSU again went quietly in the second, while Smith earned a pair of pick-offs to clear the bases in the third while also striking out a batter.
Â
The Bobcats picked up their first base hit of the day in the bottom of the third, as sophomore Manny Hall lined a two-out single into right, while freshman Drew Jourdan doubled, however a fly ball to center ended the threat. After a scoreless fourth, West Chester got themselves going in the top of the fifth with an error starting things out, followed by a pair of singles, hit by pitches, and walks to score four runs, then a wild pitch netted their fifth of the frame. Frostburg wouldn't manage another baserunner in the game, as the Golden Rams plated one more in the seventh on a walk and back-to-back singles to take the 6-0 win.
Â
With the losses, FSU drops to 7-4 on the year, while West Chester improves to 7-1. The sides will play again tomorrow, March 8 with another doubleheader set to begin at 4 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
