KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Frostburg State Acrobatics & Tumbling team came away with an MEC tri-meet sweep over West Liberty and Kutztown on Friday evening.
FSU began the meet with an early lead, as they topped both WLU and KU in every heat of the Compulsory Event, impressing most in the Pyramid (9.65) and Toss (9.30) heats. Overall, the Bobcats outpaced their opponents at 35.40 to the Golden Bears' 33.15 and Hilltoppers' 32.25. Despite a misstep in the first Acro heat, Frostburg was able to still recover and win the next two heats, earning an 8.90 in the 6-Element and a 9.45 in the 7-Element for an event score of 25.80.
During the Pyramid Event, FSU was the only team of the three to score above a 9 in all three heats, as each one was at least a 9.35. The Bobcats' strong suit would be the Open Heat, netting a 9.55 en route to a 28.35-26.90-25.25 event victory. At the half, Frostburg held a score of 89.55, with Kutztown next at 86.50 and West Liberty in third on 80.00.
In the Toss Event, KU would earn the highest mark in the 450 Salto but FSU came out ahead in both the Synchronized (8.15) and Open (8.70) heats to take the event just ahead of the hosts 24.50-24.20. The Tumbling Event was one of the most competitive of the meet, as Frostburg and Kutztown went back-and-forth all the way through. Among the group passes, the Golden Bears held a 7.95-7.40 advantage in the Duo, to which the Bobcats responded with a 6.75-6.25 win in the Trio and the teams tied at 6.55 in the Quad. Kutztown came out strong in the individual passes with an 8.825 in the Aerial and a 9.10 in the 6-Element, but sophomore Ryan Fisk would have the last laugh with the highest Open Pass at 8.85. KU just came out ahead in the event overall 46.40 to 45.875, getting to within just a couple points of FSU's overall score.
For the Team Event, the Bobcats were the first on the floor and impressed with a 72.40, as neither of the other two sides could top more than 65 in their routines, giving Frostburg the meet victory with the final score of 232.325, Kutztown at 221.190, and West Liberty at 208.040.
With the sweep, FSU improves to 3-0 on the year and will next have their home opener in Bobcat Arena against Glenville State on Thursday, March 5 at 6 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
