Fopossi's Free Kick Stunner Gives Men's Soccer 1-1 Draw with Hilltoppers

WEST LIBERTY, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team earned a 1-1 draw on the road against West Liberty in their Wednesday evening match-up.

WLU wasted little time in getting on the front foot, as they earned a corner three and a half minutes into the first half, with Ethan Nethery being found at the top of the box to fire into the roof of the net for a 1-0 lead. FSU's first attempt would come 13 minutes later, where junior Dom Good had a great chance to equalize but put his header just wide of the post.

The Hilltoppers came back on the attack, putting one shot wide then forcing graduate keeper Josiah Emerson into a fantastic diving save to prevent a second score. Just before the half hour mark, on a West Liberty giveaway, Good was brought down just outside the box for a free kick, where sophomore Christ Fopossi put a postage stamp into the top right corner to level things at 1-1.

Four minutes later, sophomore Diego Peralta thought he had given the Bobcats the lead with a powerful shot that WLU keeper Shai'ya Fitzgerald was able to tip over the bar. Fopossi then shot just high while sophomore Frank Stare couldn't get enough power on a curling effort to beat Fitzgerald, taking the game into the half tied.

Both sides struggled to create chances to begin the second period, as it took 14 minutes for the Hilltoppers to sent one shot high and another right at Emerson. Another hit went over the bar while Frostburg's opening effort of the half, from senior Anthony Diaz, took a deflection and clipped the top of the bar and out for a corner. For the final 10 minutes, neither team wanted to concede anything defensively, as the only shots came from well outside the box by West Liberty and nowhere near the goal, leaving things at a 1-1 draw.

WLU held a narrow 8-6 advantage in shots, with both teams putting three on target.

With the result, Frostburg is now 6-2-5 on the year, while West Liberty moves to 6-5-2. The Bobcats will return home to face Point Park on Sunday, October 18 at 1p.m. for their Homecoming Weekend match. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
