FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team concluded Homecoming Weekend with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Point Park on Sunday afternoon.
Â
FSU looked threatening on the counter early on, as sophomore Frank Stare nearly gave his team the lead but couldn't put enough power on his right foot to beat PPU keeper Anthony Fusay. At the other end, the Pioneers had their first look at goal on a curling effort wide, then Stare again lacked the pace on his shot necessary to beat Fusay. 10 minutes later, Point Park had arguably the best chance for either side up to that point, with Guilherme Galvao being played into the box but firing the wrong side of the post.
Â
Stare then looked to volley home off a deflection from a free kick but put it high and wide, while Hector Moreno glanced a header off target for the visitors. In the last five minutes of the half, Stare had an excellent chance on his left foot after some great play by sophomore Inzaghi Harmon, however his effort glanced just over the crossbar. The final chance came to PPU as Louis Guffroy tried to find the back post on his left foot but got too much of it and sent the game into the break still scoreless.
Â
Eight minutes into the second half, Guffroy had the first effort for either side and was the closest that Point Park came to a goal, with his shot taking a deflection and forcing graduate keeper Josiah Emerson to switch directions and dive to his left for the save. Almost immediately at the other end, Frostburg earned a pair of corners from which graduate Mateo Cuadros had a goal-bound effort blocked while freshman Lynghton Romage sent a header wide of the net. Through the next 20 minutes, neither side managed to create much offensively, as Guffroy and graduate Kevin Garcia-Torres each had efforts go off target, while Romage did well to block a powerful strike from Gianfranco Arguello.
Â
Heading into the final 10 minutes, senior Anthony Diaz received the ball at midfield and played Harmon in down the right wing, as he cut into the box on his left foot and uncorked a rocket to the top left corner to give FSU the lead. Looking to protect their advantage, Frostburg's defense repelled nearly everything that PPU sent their way, while also generating another chance where sophomore Christ Fopossi had a shot blocked. With 90 seconds to go, a free kick was awarded 35 yards from goal, where Moreno tried to catch Emerson out on a quick take but never came close to the target, as the clock hit zero on the 1-0 Bobcat win.
Â
FSU held a 10-8 advantage in shots, putting three on goal to the visitors' one.
Â
With the win, Frostburg improves to 7-2-5 on the year, while Point Park drops to 5-6-3. The Bobcats will remain at home to host Wheeling on Wednesday, October 21 at 5 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
