MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Frostburg State Baseball team fell in their midweek non-conference matchup with Millersville on Wednesday afternoon by a final score of 8-5.
In a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament contest, Frostburg looked to get ahead quickly, with sophomore Ryan Bouma smacking one over the right field fence for a 1-0 Bobcat lead after the team's first appearance at the plate. Junior Joe Pippin was given the start from the mound for the midweek matchup, as Millersville tied the game at 1-1 off a sacrifice fly. FSU slowed things down on offense in the top of the second, as the Marauders worked Pippin, scoring another run to take a 2-1 edge, causing sophomore Ben Berger to take over. Berger recorded the final out of the inning, leaving three on for MU to get out of the jam.
Junior Kade Abrisz walked to lead off the third, moving to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore Jackson Schalick then doubled to right, sending Abrisz to third. With his second hit of the day, Bouma picked up another RBI, roping a single to center to tie the game at 2-2. With Schalick then advancing to third, senior Mikey Guy connected on a sacrifice fly to left to bring in Schalick for a 3-2 FSU lead.
Berger got a duo of outs to start the bottom of the inning, but Millersville was able to find their rhythm and rally, knocking three hits for two runs to jump back in front 4-3. Abrisz and redshirt freshman CJ Carmichael were credited with a pair of singles in the fourth, but were both left on base. Redshirt freshman Cody Sharman took over on the mound in the bottom half of the fourth, as the Marauders found two more runs to extend their advantage to 6-3. Freshman Hunter Layhew came in to get the final out of the inning, causing a ground out to end the fifth with two on base for MU.
Guy collected a single to center in the fifth, as Layhew gave up a single from Millersville in the inning as well, as the Marauders were able to capitalize off a wild pitch to move the game to 7-3. Both teams saw a three-up three-down situation in the sixth, with sophomore Bryce Hendricks seeing a 1-2-3- inning from the mound. Again, the Bobcats were unable to get anything done at the plate in their at-bats of the seventh, as MU snagged a run off graduate Dan Morgano for a 8-3 score heading into the eighth.
Breaking the offensive drought for FSU was Guy, sending a solo shot over the right field fence to cut the Bobcats' deficit in half 8-4. Redshirt senior Nate Vermillion threw from the bump in the bottom of the eighth, seeing the minimum and recording a strikeout. In their final at-bats, sophomore Logan Helser ripped a double to left center, coming home to score on an RBI single up the middle from Schalick, but Frostburg was unable to do anymore damage, dropping the contest 8-5.
Schalick, Bouma, and Guy each recorded a pair of hits on the day, with Bouma and Guy seeing two RBI as well.
With the loss, Frostburg falls to 10-6 on the season, while Millersville moves to 14-3. The Bobcats next host Charleston (WV) for their home opener on Saturday, March 22 at 1 PM. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
