Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Davis, Calhoun Each Score a Pair in Men's Lacrosse Loss to No. 18 Knights

COLCHESTER, VT – The Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team dropped their first contest of spring break, falling to No. 18 Saint Michael's by a final score of 11-8 on Tuesday afternoon.

Frostburg took the first shot of the game just over a minute in with senior Tyrin Long being credited with the attempt, but Saint Michael's was able to strike first, finding the back of the net on their first look for a 1-0 lead.  The Knights ripped another shot inside that missed wide left, as freshman Jack Laye looked to tie things up on the Bobcats' offensive half, but also missed wide left.  On their next try, SMC jumped out in front 2-0, knotting home just their third shot of the game.  FSU struggled to get going on offense, not seeing a shot, as Saint Michael's continued to work for a 3-0 advantage.  Around the midway mark of the quarter, sophomore Baylor Davis got one by for Frostburg, but SMC responded right away off the face-off for a 4-1 game.  Senior Alex Walstrum won the next face-off attempt, as everything started to fall into place for FSU, as Davis sent another one in to cut the Bobcat's deficit in half.  As time finished out in the first, both Long and Laye got their next looks to go, as senior Logan Covey denied two shots from the Knights to see a 4-4 game going into the second.

SMC started the offense in the second, collecting a score not even two minutes in to jump back on top 5-4.  Sophomore Jack Hooks and senior Ben Smith both sent in attempt at goal, as both teams slowed down bit on offense.  The Bobcats kept Saint Michael's without a shot for almost seven minutes, when off the rebound of their next attempt, the Knights got another one to go to advance their edge to 6-4.  Frostburg was unable to successfully set up their offense as time went on in the quarter, as SMC sent in five shots over the span of six minutes.  Covey stood in the way of four of the tries, while one was fired wide, leaving the halftime score at 6-4.

Saint Michael's looked to start things off quickly to open the third, sending in a shot that was high.  Junior Will Stephanos was credited with a caused turnover on the defensive end to give FSU the ball, but the Bobcats were unable to keep possession.  On their next attempt in their offensive half, the Knights struck again to increase their lead to 7-4.  Senior Seamus Kearney then fired a shot off the CT by Walstrum but sent it just to the right.  Covey stood in the way of two more of SMC's attempts, as junior John Serina fed sophomore JT Calhoun for Frostburg's first score since the first quarter, bringing the game to 7-6.  The Bobcats used that momentum, as Walstrum was credited with the win off the face-off, which led to sophomore Luke Roach finding Hooks for a goal and a 7-6 game.  Hooks and Laye looked to tie the game, each with another shot themselves, but neither were able to do so as time went on.  Covey racked up another save in goal before Saint Michael's took back-to-back goals to go up 9-6 heading into the fourth.

Calhoun brought FSU within two with the first strike of the fourth, as senior Tristan Anderson was credited with the assist.  Kearney and junior Hayden Tyler both worked on defense to pick up a caused turnover, as neither team put up a shot for a span of minutes.  After around four minutes of no action, Frostburg worked to send in a trio of shots, but none were able to find the back of the net.  The Knights then answered with three consecutive shots themselves, with Covey seeing another save as the score remained 9-7.  Sophomore Henry Sykes was given two looks at a goal, but one of his chances was saved while the other was blocked.  With under a minute left in regulation, Saint Michaels put in their first goal of the quarter to go back up by three, as Roach quickly answered with a score to put the game back at 10-8.  With under 10 seconds left, the Knights added one more to their total, seeing the final score at 11-8 as time finished out.

Davis and Calhoun each finished with two goals, as four other Bobcats tallied one.  Kearney paved the defensive effort for Frostburg with a team-high eight ground balls and two CT's, while three other Bobcats saw a pair of caused turnovers as well.  Covey finished with 13 saves in goal.

With the loss, Frostburg falls to 3-4 on the season, while Saint Michael's improves to 5-1.  The Bobcats remain up north to finish out their week with a 7 PM contest with Bentley on Thursday, March 20 in Waltham, MA.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
