Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

#11 Falcons Use Strong 1st and 3rd Quarters to Defeat Men's Lacrosse

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team ended their trip to the Northeast with a 12-5 loss to No. 11 Bentley on Thursday evening.

Senior Alex Walstrum began the game by winning the opening face-off, as BU was called for an early penalty, but a blocked shot prevented capitalizing on the man-up chance. The sides traded possessions, with the Falcons converting a Bobcat turnover into the opening goal just over four minutes in. After another Walstrum FO win, each team combined for five turnovers in the next four minutes, with Bentley firing a pair of shots wide before Frostburg got possession back, where freshman Jack Laye evened the game after being found by senior Tyrin Long. BU took advantage of another FSU turnover to go back ahead 2-1 with just over three minutes to go, then in the final 20 seconds, they picked up a groundball following a save, putting home the rebound for a 3-1 lead at the end of the first.

Following a face-off violation against the Falcons, it took just 46 seconds into the second period for senior Emanuel Jackson Jr. to pull the Bobcats within a goal. Two minutes later, senior Logan Covey made another save in net, but a one-minute Frostburg penalty allowed Bentley to regain their two-goal lead, which furthered again after the hosts took the resulting face-off home 40 seconds later for a 5-2 lead. Sophomore Baylor Davis was able to hit back after picking up the groundball off the X, driving in for a solo goal and a 5-3 game. Both goaltenders stood tall almost until the half, with Covey making a trio of saves while BU's keeper Ryan Bordiere fended off a pair of man-down situations and was also helped out by the post. With just 10 seconds until the half, the Falcons stole momentum headed to the locker room with a Nathan Alviti goal that put them up 6-3 at the break.

Bentley kept their pressure up to start the third, needing just 43 seconds to go up 7-3, adding another score two minutes later. Frostburg tested Bordiere twice more but couldn't find the back of the net, as on the latter save BU got a quick clear and put home their ninth for a six-goal advantage. The Falcons again shut down a man-up FSU chance, while the Bobcats hit the post once more before Kyle Piersiak found Will Adams for a 10-3 Falcon lead. Covey and Bordiere each recorded another save apiece before the frame came to a close.

The sides turned the ball over to each other twice to start the fourth, as it wasn't until over five minutes in when freshman Kobe Link got the scoring started off a pass from sophomore Luke Roach. Frostburg peppered the goal with three shots before senior Wesley Phillips broke through on an assist from sophomore Henry Sykes to get within 10-5. Covey made another save in net, but FSU's offense wasn't able to get a shot away for the next five minutes, while the Falcons were able to run the clock down to just over a minute to go before scoring their 11th of the game. A violation gave them the ball right back, where they nailed home the final goal of their 12-5 victory.

Five different Bobcats scored on the day, with another three players providing assists, with Walstrum standing out at the X with 10-of-12 face-off wins. Sophomore Ryder Walter led the defensive effort with a caused turnover and four groundballs, with Covey making nine saves in net.

With the loss, Frostburg drops to 3-5 on the year, while Bentley improves to 4-2. FSU remains on the road as they get back into ECC action on Wednesday, March 26 against District of Columbia at 4 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
