Baseball Works for 47 Runs, 30 Hits in Road Sweep of GSU

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Frostburg State Baseball team used an impressive performance at the plate to combine for wins of 26-4 and 21-3 over Glenville State on Saturday.
 
Frostburg made their move quickly on offense, showing two runs in their first at-bats, after sophomores Jackson Schalick and Ryan Bouma, followed by senior Doyle McNew were all given a free base.  Redshirt junior Ben Wieman was then hit by a pitch to bring one runner in, while graduate Randy Steen then drew an RBI walk to bring in another one for FSU to make it a 2-0 game.  Senior Jacob McDonald thew for the Bobcats in game one, giving up one hit in his first outing, leaving the runner on base for Glenville. 
 
FSU took advantage of GSU's pitching in the second, scoring another run after the four first batters were given a free base.  McNew then knocked a bases-clearing a double to add three more runs to Frostburg's total, as junior Jake Holler then drew another walk for the Bobcats, coming home to score off a two-run bomb to right from Steen to sit the game at 8-0 for the Bobcats.  With his offense doing the job, McDonald stranded another Pioneer on base in the bottom of the inning, recording his third strikeout on the day. 
 
Senior Mikey Guy sent a single to center for the Bobcats' lone hit of the third, as McDonald showed a 1-2-3 go-around in the bottom of the inning, adding two more K's to his total.  Wieman led off the fourth with a homer to right, as redshirt freshman CJ Carmichael smacked a single to load the bases, setting up Schalick for an RBI walk to push the game to 10-0.  With bases still loaded, Bouma was then credited with a sacrifice fly to bring home junior Kade Abrisz, who reached base on a walk, all before Guy belted a three-run shot over the right field fence to advance the game to 14-0. 
 
Glenville put a run on the board in their at-bats of the fourth, connecting on a solo shot to open up their offense, as McDonald knotted a strikeout to finish out the inning with two Pioneers still on base.  The Bobcats kept going in the fifth, taking advantage of two errors from GSU.  Wieman was walked, prior to senior Cy Probst reaching on an error, as the former scored on another error from GSU, and the latter came home on a sacrifice fly from Schalick.  Guy tallied a two-RBI double to left for a 17-1 score, before Holler, Wieman, and sophomore Brian Scott pushed out a trio of RBI singles, all adding a score to FSU's total for a 20-1 game.  Probst ended the inning with a two-RBI double to left, sending the game into the bottom the fifth at 22-1.   
 
Freshman Josh Domaracki came in to pitch for FSU in the bottom of the inning, as GSU was able to splurge for another run.  Senior Cael Huyer led off the sixth with a single to right, as freshman Manny Hall was credited with the next hit of the inning, a three-run shot to right center to increase FSU's lead to 25-2.  Redshirt sophomore Maizen Price and redshirt freshman Cody Sharman finished out the sixth from the mound, as the Pioneers knocked one hit for two runs to get a 25-4 game.  Scott reached base on another Glenville error to start the seventh, as Probst, Carmichael, and sophomore Cole Carter all worked for three more consecutive singles for the Bobcats, as Carter was given the RBI, bringing home Scott.  Junior Bryce Snyder closed out the game for FSU, seeing three straight K's to leave the final score at 26-4 in game one. 
 
Frostburg continued their all-around success in game two, getting on the board right away in the first after an RBI double from Bouma.  Bouma then came around to score on a wild pitch and an error by GSU to make the score 2-0 after FSU's first two batters.  Steen then drew a bases loaded walk to secure another RBI on the day, before Wieman touched home on a passed ball to open the game at 4-0.  Senior Patrick Bauer got the nod from the bump in game two, giving up a double but leaving the runner on base with an inning ending K.
 
Guy started the second with a single, stealing second, and advancing to third on a single knock from McNew.  McNew then proceeded to steal second, allowing Guy to take home on the throw.  Probst then put the ball in play to bring home McNew, as he reached on another Glenville error.  Holler came in to pinch run for Probst, adding another score to the Bobcats lead after an RBI triple from Steen.  GSU knocked another homer in the second, as Bauer then recorded two more strikeouts to leave the game at 7-1 after two. 
 
Carmichael led off the third with a single to left, moving to third on a single from Schalick.  Guy then saw a sacrifice fly to score Carmichael, as McNew knocked in Schalick for a 9-1 game off an RBI single.  Bauer saw a quick outing in the bottom of the inning, leaving another one on for GSU and grabbing two more strikeouts.  Holler belted a home run for Frostburg in the top of the fourth, before Carmichael was credited with an RBI single for an 11-1 score, before coming home on an error by the Pioneers to add another run to FSU's total.  Bauer faced the minimum number of batters in the bottom half of the inning, again seeing a pair of strikeouts to keep the game 12-1.
 
McNew and Wieman drew back-to-back walks to open up the fifth, as Steen doubled down the left field line to bring in McNew.  Wieman touched home plate on a sacrifice fly to center by Carmichael to advance the score to 14-1.  Senior Christian Shertzer received a walk for an RBI, as well did Guy after being hit by a pitch, all leading to a 16-1 game.  Huyer took over on the mound in the bottom of the inning, giving up one hit but stranding the runner. 
 
The Bobcats added another run in the top of the sixth off an RBI single from Scott, as sophomore Christian Bonilla came in to throw in the bottom of the inning, as Glenville worked for a 17-3 game.  Shertzer got on board in the beginning of the seventh off a single, as McNew and Wieman both reached on back-to-back errors from Glenville to load the bases.  Capping off his carer day in a Frostburg uniform was Holler, who smacked a grand slam over the right field fence to jump the game to 21-3.  Redshirt senior Nate Vermillion threw to close out the seventh, giving up one hit to end the game with a 21-3 final. 
 
Steen, Guy, and Carmichael each had four hits on the day, combining for 13 runs and 15 RBI.  McNew and Holler were next with three hits apiece, combining for nine runs and 10 RBI.  14 Bobcats recorded at least one hit on the day, while the team drew 26 walks across the two games.  McDonald picked up his first win of the season in game one, striking out six in five innings, while Bauer received his third win of the year in game two, only giving up two hits in four innings and fanning seven. 
 
With the sweep, Frostburg improves to 10-5 on the season, while Glenville falls 10-10.  The Bobcats will remain on the road for a single nine-inning midweek game on Wednesday, March 19, when the team travels to face Millersville at 3 PM.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
