Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Goals From Salvadge, Kennedy, Stare Lead Men's Soccer to Victory Over Cardinals

WHEELING, W. Va. – The Frostburg State men's soccer team won on the road over Wheeling by a 3-1 final.

The opening 10 minutes featured little in the way of attacking play, as FSU had just a corner which didn't produce a shot. Graduate Abdur-Rahman Neama had an effort go over the bar, while classmate Mateo Cuadros had a couple efforts straight at keeper Daniel Delo. After the Cardinals had a pair of efforts off target, they took advantage of a set piece from the left wing, swinging in a ball to the pack post that was headed by Alex Yesufu for a 1-0 lead.

The Bobcats needed to respond and did exactly that two minutes later, as Cuadros played a clever ball ahead to sophomore Mason Salvadge who cut behind a sliding defender to find the bottom left corner to tie things up for his first of the season. Nearly 10 minutes later, FSU was on target again, as freshman Inzaghi Harmon fought to win a long ball and took it to the endline before sending back across the box for fellow freshman Nate Kennedy to place his shot right over the only defender to the back of the net to go up 2-1.

Late in the first, sophomore Jan Foret would have a nice save on a one-on-one chance to keep the lead. With five minutes until the half, Wheeling would find it much more difficult to get themselves back level, as a player was shown a straight red card for dissent, as the Bobcats held onto their one-goal lead.

With a man up in the second half, Frostburg would play a determined WU unit, who didn't lay down in their fight. Both teams had struggles getting shots to find their marks, as six efforts went either high or wide within the first 15 minutes. FSU had an opportunity to double their lead when Harmon was played in behind by freshman Frank Stare, but his shot to the far past was denied on a fantastic Delo kick save.

After Wheeling put another effort wide, Cuadros put one high as each side looked for the next score. With just under eight minutes to go, Cuadros would fire a long pass up the right wing, where Stare gathered and cut back across the face of two Cardinal defenders before firing low and left got past Delo for the desired 3-1 lead. The insurance goal helped settle Frostburg the rest of the way, as WU had one shot from distance easily gathered by Foret, while another went over the bar as the clock hit zeroes.

Each team had 13 efforts on the night, with the Bobcats putting six on goal compared to the Cardinals' three.

The win for the Bobcats gets them to 3-4-1 on the season, while Wheeling is now 1-6-. The Bobcats will host No. 5 Charleston on Sunday, October 5 for Homecoming weekend at 4 PM. For more information visit frostburgsports.com.
