Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Strong Defensive Effort Leads Men's Soccer to Goalless Draw with #5 Charleston

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team battled No. 5 Charleston (WV) to a 0-0 draw, picking up their first-ever point against the perennial powerhouse at home during Homecoming Weekend.

Four minutes into the game, the Bobcats managed to create the first chance when sophomore goalkeeper Jan Foret received a back pass and lined the ball over the heads of the UC defense, putting classmate Dominic Good in a prime position through on goal, but his shot went just wide left of the net. The two teams exchanged possession for the next few minutes before the Golden Eagles were able to put up two shots within a minute, both of which veered away from the target.

In addition to getting the first shot, Frostburg also had the first corner kick over 15 minutes into the game on the near side, as senior Jason Guevara took the kick, setting one to classmate Carlos Quintero Rivas, who headed the ball toward the goal, but was blocked. Six minutes later, Good had another chance, as sophomore Andrew Denard crossed the ball to him in the box, where some tricky footwork got him into shooting position, but the effort was deflected by a Charleston defender.

Looking to stay ahead in shots, UC had another chance as Martin Echarren soared one high, requiring Foret to jump to make the save. FSU was staying toe-to-toe with the might of the Golden Eagles, as graduate Mateo Cuadros put the pass of the game through to freshman Nate Kennedy, whose shot went under the legs of Charleston's goalkeeper Konstantinos Parisis but off to the left. UC would take one more shot from Echarren but it was stopped before reaching Foret as the half came to a close at 0-0.

Charleston got the first shot out of the break, though it took nearly ten minutes and was relatively comfortably saved by Foret. FSU then had two back-to-back chances, with senior Kevin Garcia-Torres rocketing a shot into the shins of UC's defense, while sophomore Mason Salvadge headed just wide of the net. Denard had another chance when he raced past a Golden Eagle defender to gain possession and shot towards the goal, though Parisis did well to smother the chance having raced out from his goal.

After Charleston put another effort into the hands of Foret, freshman Diego Peralta tried to fire one in, but UC's defenders were once again in the path. Over the next 13 minutes, the only two chances fell to the Golden Eagles, with Foret making a pair of stops, one right at him and the second diving to his right-hand side. With the clock running down, Charleston found chances difficult to come by, with two of their better opportunities coming on headers over the bar off of corner kicks. The final minutes featured a late flurry of fouls that broke up any momentum and sealed the 0-0 result.

UC held a 12-8 advantage shots on the night, putting five of those on goal, while FSU had one on target. It was the first time that the Bobcats had ever held the Golden Eagles goalless and broke a 12-match losing streak.

The tie for Frostburg moves their record to 3-4-2 and the Golden Eagles move to 7-0-3. On Wednesday, October 8, the Bobcats hit the road to play Davis & Elkins at 4 PM. For more information, visit frostburgsports.com.
