FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Rugby team picked up a win over New Haven to celebrate senior day, as the Bobcats won 58-38 over the Chargers.
On a beautiful Fall day in Frostburg, Women's Rugby honored their three seniors, Grace Hall, Lydia Hall and Rhiana Hall, as well as graduate assistant coach Sarah Giachetti, while surrounded by friends and family.
The Bobcats started the match off looking like it would be a good day for FSU. Frostburg executed a textbook lineout, moving the ball down field right away. FSU threatened to score multiple times early, finally breaking through in the 16th minute with sophomore Lauren Dils converting the try to put the Bobcats up 5-0. New Haven would then quickly answer to tie the game. After playing 10 minutes at 5-5, the Bobcats retook the lead on a try from freshman Scout Spadoni, followed up with a conversion from freshman Natalie Allen. With FSU now up 12-5, Spadoni continued her success, scoring her second try of the day. Sophomore LaJess Jordan then added to Frostburg's lead with her try, making the score 22-5. With no time left on the clock, FSU put their stamp on the first half, as junior Camryn Wyatt tacked on a try, sending the match into the half with a Bobcat lead of 29-5.
The start of the second half looked similar to the first, as Allen got her first try of the game, followed by Spadoni securing her third of the day. After a successful penalty try from the Chargers, the Bobcats answered again, with sophomore Birtukan Sherburne adding a try a couple minutes later. With FSU now leading 46-12 with just over 26 minutes remaining, New Haven could have easily packed it in, but instead came charging back, scoring 24 straight points to make the score 46-38. Frostburg added to their lead late with a penalty try from Spadoni, followed by a try from sophomore Isabel Meyer, allowing the final score to read 58-38 in favor of the Bobcats.
