Ibarra's Strike Not Enough in Men's Soccer Loss to West Liberty

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team fell to West Liberty in an MEC conference matchup by a score of 2-1 at home on Wednesday evening.

Frostburg started things on offense right off the bat, with senior Bryce Costello ripping a shot bottom center that was saved by the Hilltoppers' keeper, Noah Underwood. West Liberty got their offense going as well, firing a shot at goal that was saved by graduate Joel Assal. FSU kept their offensive momentum going, moving the ball to find two more shots, one from sophomore Kevin Garcia-Torres and another one from Costello. Both teams traded fouls, still fighting for the first goal 25 minutes in, before junior Laki Psallidas dished a perfect pass over to sophomore Anthony Ibarra, who volleyed the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 FSU lead with just under seven minutes remaining in the half.

After back and forth play for over two minutes, WLU fired another shot at goal, with Assal earning himself another save. Frostburg regained possession, taking the ball down field and moving it around, as Psallidas found himself with a try at goal, knocking the ball into the hands of Underwood. The Bobcats were able to try for a corner before the half, but were unable to capitalize, keeping the game 1-0 heading into the break.

West Liberty quickly turned things around to start the second half, finding the ball in their offensive half for a quick shot that went wide left, before firing another shot into the back of the net, tying the game at 1-1 within the first five minutes. The Hilltoppers maintained possession, allowing their offense two more tries at goal, with one shot being saved by Assal. The Bobcats finally found themselves with a try at goal, as sophomore Carlos Quintero Rivas ripped a shot wide right. Assal grabbed another save off another shot from WLU, before the Hilltoppers sliced another one in goal, taking a 2-1 lead with just over 20 minutes remaining.

Both teams slowed down as time winded down, trading fouls and substitutions. Junior Alex Retzos was open for two shots, with senior Gage Adams taking one as well, as two were saved by the goalie and one missed wide left. The Bobcats had a terrific try at goal, with Retzos firing a shot right on target that was just headed off the line by a WLU defender. With six minutes left, West Liberty tried to up their lead, but were again denied by Assal. Neither team was able to make an offensive run to end the game, as Frostburg dropped the contest with a final of 2-1.

With the loss, FSU falls to 3-4 on the season, while West Liberty moves to 3-1-2. The Bobcats will remain home for another MEC matchup, as they host Concord on Saturday, September 23 at 1 PM. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
