FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team defeated conference opponent Concord University at home on Saturday afternoon by a score of 1-0.
With the rain pouring down and playing a big factor on play, neither team had a strong start to the game. After a few minutes of play, Frostburg was able to settle and control the ball, resulting in junior Laki Psallidas having the first shot on goal. Both teams went back and forth trading multiple free kicks, corner kicks, and shots all around the midway mark of the first half. The Bobcats were able to play solid defense, not allowing the Mountain Lions to get within the eighteen. Graduate Joel Assal made a save on a shot taken from Concord around the 20-yard-line. Assal quickly played the ball up field, where the ball found the foot of graduate Alex Flores. Flores turned towards goal, making a leading pass to junior Alex Retzos, who took a touch just outside the eighteen, and knocked one up and over past the goalie and into the back of the net for a 1-0 FSU lead. With less than five minutes remaining in the half, CU attempted a shot to tie the game at one apiece, but was unsuccessful, allowing Frostburg to keep a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
The weather did not let up to start the second half, as both teams continued to battle the rain. Both teams traded a duo of shots to start the second, with sophomores Kevin Garcia-Torres and Carols Quintero Rivas both firing shots away at goal, and Assal being credited with another save at the other end. Both teams got a little more aggressive fighting for the ball, as FSU was able to gain possession for two more shots, both being saved by the Mountain Lions keeper. The Bobcats defense stepped up, not allowing Concord a chance at goal for 28 minutes. In that time, FSU put together three offensive runs that resulted in three shots, but neither try was successful. Both teams fought for possession for the last minute, battling the ball around, but Frostburg was able to maintain the lead, taking the game with a final score of 1-0.Â
With the conclusion of the game, FSU moves to an overall record of 4-4 , while Concord falls to an overall record of 1-2-3. The Bobcats are back in action on Wednesday, September 27 as they travel to face Wheeling for an MEC matchup set for 7 PM. For more information, visit frostburgsports.com
