DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – In a top ECC matchup, the Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team fell to rival No. 8 Mercy on the road, with a close score of 9-7 on Friday afternoon.
Mercy struck first in the afternoon tilt, finding the back of the net 3:17 into the game. Another quick tally by the home team saw Frostburg trailing 2-0 early, before senior Jake Bowman cut the deficit to 2-1. Just 13 seconds later, the Mavericks struck again, to make it a 3-1 game. With just 34 seconds left in the first quarter, senior Justin Hulse would beat Mercy's goalkeeper to pull FSU back to within one. The second quarter slowed down offensively for both teams, with each side scoring just once. The two teams traded man-up goals as Bowman double-dipped, as the Bobcats found themselves down 4-3 after the first half.
The second half carried a slow start, with neither team scoring until halfway into the third. A second man-up goal for Mercy put Frostburg down by a pair with 8:17 left in the quarter. With 3:26 left in the third, the pace picked up as two goals were traded in a span of seven seconds. Senior Owen McCallum made it 5-4 with an unassisted tally, before the Mavericks responded yet again, just seven seconds later. FSU continued their late quarter antics as McCallum made it a 6-5 game with 37 seconds left in the third. Mercy quickly got that goal back to start the fourth, tallying two more goals in the quarter as well, with FSU also knotting two more in the quarter. Bowman scored his hat-trick marker man-up with 8:31 to play in regulation, as the game would stay knotted at a one goal spread until the final two minutes. With just under a minute and a half left, the Mavericks snatched the two-goal lead back, sealing their fate, as FSU dropped the game with a final score of 9-7.
Bowman finished with another hat-trick on the season, for a total of three points. McCallum finished with two goals and two assists, tallying four points. Despite the loss, graduate Mitch Meckley put up a strong 13 saves in goal.
With the loss, Frostburg moves to 9-2 on the season, while Mercy improves to 9-2. The Bobcats are back in action on Tuesday, April 11 as they venture home to square off against the Senators of Davis & Elkins for a 7 PM opening faceoff.
