Men's Lacrosse Survives Late Senator Comeback Attempt for Home Victory

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team bounced back from their Friday road loss with a 17-13 home win over Davis & Elkins on Tuesday night.

Graduate goaltender Mitch Meckley was forced into early action, making a save just 17 seconds into the game, as neither team was able to find an early opener. Senior Tanner Donaldson finally got the scoring going with just under 12 minutes on the clock, firing a solo goal to the back of the net, followed immediately by junior Drew Downing winning the face-off and taking the ball straight down the field for a 2-0 Bobcat lead. The Senators got on the board at the 10:27 mark, as the teams traded goals, with senior Justin Hulse scoring before D&E capitalized on a man-up opportunity to bring the score to 3-2. FSU began to click, with senior Jake Bowman feeding classmate Owen McCallum before the former scored himself on an assist by junior Austin Sipes. Sipes then went on to score, with Davis & Elkins hitting back and senior Bubba Love ending the period with a solo goal to put Frostburg ahead 7-3 headed to the second quarter.

A combination of missed shots and solid goaltending from the Senators kept the FSU advantage the same all the way until the 8:43 mark, when Bowman finally broke the scoring duck at 8-3. Again, D&E found an answer and kept within striking distance, as they tried to hold on defensively despite an onslaught of Bobcat shots, two of which ended up getting into the goal from Hulse and Bowman to bring the game to 10-4 at halftime.

Frostburg clicked to open the third period, with senior Chase Buckwalter and sophomore Seamus Kearney picking up their first goals of the day for a 12-4 lead. A Davis & Elkins goal with 8:46 on the clock only fueled the FSU offense, with Buckwalter scoring on a Hulse assist and Bowman going back-to-back, as Sipes got another goal with 12 seconds left in the quarter for a commanding 16-5 lead.

After a Senators goal began the fourth quarter, Sipes fired back on a feed from junior Tyler Dooley, as Frostburg seemed to be in cruise control with just under 12 minutes left in the game at 17-6. D&E would not be following that script, scoring seven goals in seven minutes and suddenly finding themselves down just four at 17-13 with four minutes to go. The Bobcats gathered themselves defensively and forced the game into a shutout the rest of the way, ending the contest with the home victory.

Bowman led the offense with five goals and an assist, while Sipes added three goals and a pair of dishes. Downing and sophomore Alex Walstrum were a force in the face-off circle, winning 17 of their combined 22 attempts.

Win the win, Frostburg improves to 10-2 on the year, while Davis & Elkins falls to 3-11. FSU is back at home on Saturday, April 15 to face Molloy at 1 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
