Women's Lacrosse Holds On Late in Road Victory Over Falcons

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team held their lead and finished strong, taking a huge 10-9 road victory over Notre Dame College (Ohio) on Thursday afternoon.

After a back and forth first nine minutes of play, Frostburg found the back of the net first, with sophomore Julia Badolato feeding freshman Neila Haney for an early 1-0 Bobcat lead at the 6:17 mark. NDC fired right back, knotting their first goal of the day not even a minute later to quickly tie things up at one apiece. With 49 seconds left in the first quarter, Haney found the back of the net once more, before freshman Dahlia Trippel recorded her first goal of the day on a free position for a 3-0 FSU lead after one quarter.

Frostburg kept their momentum going in the second, scoring the only three goals in the quarter. Senior Lilly Stephens tacked on two goals, one on a man-up free position and another off an assist from Haney. Freshman Daniella Boss got in on the scoring action with 48 seconds left in the half, finding the back of the net on another perfect dish from Haney for a 6-1 FSU lead at the break.

The Falcons opened up the scoring in the second half, bringing the game to 6-2 just a minute and half into the third. FSU tacked on two more goals at the 6:10 and 5:49 marks, with sophomore Kerri Hayes knotting one on another man-up free position and freshman Kristina Fardales scoring on a man-up situation as well. NDC responded, knotting the last two goals of the quarter to bring the game to 8-4 heading into the final frame.

Senior Maura O'Neill tallied the first goal of the fourth for the Bobcats, ripping a shot into the back of the net just a minute and half into the quarter on yet another free position. The Falcons quickly responded with two goals of their own, bringing the game to 9-6 with 11:40 left to play. Frostburg tacked on another goal to their lead, with Trippel finding junior Anna Kearney to extend the lead to four. With time winding down, NDC turned on the gas, scoring three straight goals to bring the game to 10-9 with 3:11 left in regulation. Notre Dame won the resulting draw control, then FSU faced even more difficulty when a yellow card was shown to put them a man down with two and a half on the clock. As the Falcons ran their offense, Hayes knocked the ball free and was picked up by Frostburg, giving them time to wind down the clock. After completing the clear, head coach Taylor Sindall called timeout in an attempt to gather her team to close out the game, which they did capably despite a late turnover to secure the 10-9 victory.

Haney led the way on offense for the Bobcatsm knotting two goals, two assists, and five draw controls for a total of four points. Stephens finished with two points on two goals, as Trippel finished with two points on a goal and an assist. Sophomore Nicole Gray was credited with a total of seven saves in goal, while sophomore Delaney Devers had an outstanding day in defense, causing three turnovers and picking up three groundballs.

With the win, Frostburg takes sole possession of first place in the conference at 9-7 overall, while NDC falls to 8-8. The Bobcats will return home for their regular season finale, as they host Davis & Elkins on Saturday, April 29 at 4 PM, where it will be senior day.
