FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team secured the 2023 MEC Regular Season Championship with a 21-3 over Davis & Elkins on Saturday evening.
Â
Prior to the game, FSU honored seniors Maura O'Neill, Jordan Kenney, Lilly Stephens, and Cammie Schniedwind as they finish out their respective Bobcat careers.
Â
Frostburg started out the game with a lead, as sophomore Delaney Devers caused a turnover that freshman Jenna Jenkins picked up and fed to freshman Neila Haney to run down the field and score a solo goal two minutes in. After a five-minute defensive battle, the Bobcats restarted the scoring with quickfire goals from freshman Daniella Boss either side of a man-up free position goal by Stephens. The Senators got on the board with five minutes left in the frame, but Haney scored the last two goals of the quarter to bring things to 6-1 after the first 15.
Â
Sophomore Kerri Hayes won the opening draw control of the second and scored a goal 30 seconds in. The Bobcats piled on the pressure, but couldn't break D&E's defensive wall until 6:44 on the clock, when freshman Dahlia Trippel found the back of the net. Kenney fed sophomore Julia Badolato for a man-up goal, with the latter scoring again after a goal from O'Neill, taking the lead to 11-1 at the half.
Â
Starting the third, sophomore Krissy Milburn scored on an assist from Schniedwind, followed by another free position from Stephens. Davis & Elkins would not quit at any moment, scoring the next two goals while holding Frostburg scoreless for over 10 minutes. Sophomore Brittyn Leonard finally broke the drought with 50 seconds left in the period for a 14-3 Bobcat lead going into the fourth.
Â
The final quarter belonged to FSU, with Leonard starting things on a feed from Haney, followed by junior Anna Kearney getting herself on the score sheet. Kenney and junior Camden DeMaio then went back-to-back at the midway point. Freshman Sydney Stone joined in on the fun with six and a half remaining, followed by another from DeMaio on an assist by sophomore Natalie Williams. Haney ended the day with a free position goal to cap the scoring at 21-3 Frostburg.
Â
Haney led all scorers with an astounding four goals and four assists for eight total points, one of six players to score at least two goals. Freshman Isabelle Kelly and Devers led the defensive effort with five combined caused turnovers, while sophomore Nicole Gray saved five of the eight shots on goal she faced.
Â
With the win, FSU ends the regular season at 10-7, while D&E finishes at 4-13. The two teams face each other once again next Wednesday, May 3 for the MEC Tournament Semifinals, which will be held in Bobcat Stadium at 7 p.m. Information and updates will be posted at frostburgsports.com.
