Baseball Scores 18 Runs, Sweeps West Virginia Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Baseball team swept West Virginia Wesleyan on the road in Sunday's conference doubleheader, with final scores of 13-0 and 5-4.

Both teams stayed quiet in the first two innings of the first game, as both teams were left scoreless.  Frostburg was able to record three hits, while WVWC was able to record only one, but neither team could get anything going.  FSU was the first to score in the top of the third, as sophomore Randy Steen reached first and scored on a pair of errors from Wesleyan, for a 1-0 lead.

The fifth inning is where FSU started to take over, as Steen was seen crossing home plate, again off a WVWC error, to put FSU up 2-0.  Sophomore Mike Guy was then walked and sent around to score, off a two-run bomb from senior Trevor Jones, for a 4-0 Frostburg lead.  FSU kept their foot on the gas in the sixth inning, adding five more runs to their lead.  Frostburg scored their first run of the inning off another Wesleyan error, as sophomore Danny Estrada would then hit an RBI single to bring the game to 6-0.  Guy then doubled to score Estrada, as Jones would then single to bring in Guy.  Jones crossed the plate on a groundout for another Frostburg run, to bring the game to 9-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

FSU wasn't done yet, as they scored four more runs in their last at-bats in the top of the seventh.  Junior Nick Trey reached base after being hit by a pitch, and scored on an RBI double to left field from Steen.  Guy recorded another hit and another RBI, ripping a single that would score Steen.  Steen was then sent around to score once more on back-to-back singles from juniors Stafford Allison and Ethan Kiple.  Senior Hayden McLaughlin came into pinch hit, earning himself an RBI single, to bring the game to a final score of 13-0.

Frostburg kept their momentum from the first game, striking first in game two.  In the second inning, sophomore Christian Shertzer hit a double, putting him in scoring position, as Allison smacked an RBI single to center field to bring in the first run of the game. Junior Justin Jimenez, Steen, and Estrada continued to hit singles for FSU, each recording one, as Estrada would be credited with two RBI to bring the score to 3-0.  Guy then up to bat, reached on a fielder's choice and earned an RBI, tallying the fourth run of the inning for Frostburg.

In their next at-bats, FSU added one more run to their lead as Allison hit a solo shot over the fence.  WVWC finally got on the board in the bottom of the third, bringing the game to 5-1.  Wesleyan proceeded to take over the offensive momentum, scoring the next three runs of the game to make the score 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth.  In each their last at-bats, neither team was able to add to their own score, leaving the game at 5-4, in favor of Frostburg.

On offense, sophomore Cy Probst led the way for FSU in hits with four, as Guy, Jones, and Allison all finished with three hits each, combining for eight RBI and six runs on the day.  Junior Max Proctor was credited with the win in game one, pitching an absolute gem, allowing three hits and striking out six in six innings.  Senior AJ Campbell recorded his first win of the season in game two, allowing four runs on six hits and striking out five in five innings, with Kiple earning the save, his second of the season.

With the sweep, Frostburg improves to 14-11 on the season, while Wesleyan drops to 7-16.  FSU will have a quick turn around, as they will travel to face Davis & Elkins on Monday, April 3 with the first game of the doubleheader set to begin at 1 PM.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
