TAMPA, Fla. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team fell to No. 7 Tampa by a score of 17-6 on Tuesday evening.
Frostburg started with sophomore Nicole Gray in the net as she saw action quickly, coming up with a save on a free position shot in the first minute of the game. Tampa would strike first on their next attempt going up 1-0 early on. The Spartans got another chance at a free position, this time being able to capitalize for a 2-0 advantage. After another save from Gray, the Bobcats went down the field and picked up their first goal of the game at the 11:11 mark, on a shot from sophomore Julia Badolato, who received the pass from freshman Neila Haney. FSU struggled to keep their momentum going on both sides of the field, finding themselves down 7-1 after one.
The Bobcats scored a much needed goal to start the second quarter, as freshman Dahlia Trippel ripped the ball into the back of the net to bring the score to 7-2. Frostburg struggled, yet again, to keep that momentum going, allowing the Spartans to go on another scoring run to make the score 14-2 at the half. FSU came out with a different strategy to start the third, keeping Tampa to only one goal. Junior Camden DeMaio found the back of the net for the Bobcats at the 8:02 mark, as the Spartans quickly responded, getting that goal back to bring the score to 15-3 heading into the final quarter.
Tampa would tack on another goal to start the fourth, before FSU showed some fight, scoring two straight goals from sophomore Kerri Hayes, who was fed from sophomore Krissy Milburn, and Trippel, who scored on a free position. The Spartans found the back of the net also on a free position, before Haney scored the final goal of the game for both teams, on a man-up situation to bring the final score to 17-6, in favor of Tampa.
Trippel finished with two goals on three shots, as Haney captured a goal and an assist. All goalies saw action for Frostburg, combining for a total of 15 saves, with Gray leading the way with nine.
With the loss, Frostburg falls to 1-5 on the season while Tampa improves to 8-2. The Bobcats will remain in Florida to take on No. 19 Saint Leo on Thursday, March 23 with a game time of 1 PM. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com
