Men's Lacrosse Takes Care of Saint Thomas Aquinas on the Road

SPARKILL, N.Y. – The Frostburg Men's Lacrosse team earned their sixth straight victory, defeating Saint Thomas Aquinas by a final score of 20-4 on Saturday afternoon.

The first quarter was full of great defense and goalie work, as both teams were scoreless for the first twelve minutes of the game.  Senior Jake Bowman scored the first goal off a feed from junior Austin Sipes, as the Bobcats were able to get their offense going off a Spartan turnover, caused by junior Luke McCullough.  With only one second left in the quarter, Sipes earned his second assist of the day feeding junior Tyler Dooley, who found the back of the net, for a 2-0 Frostburg lead heading into the second quarter.

Sipes, with the assist from senior Tanner Donaldson, started the scoring for the Bobcats within the first three minutes of the second quarter. Saint Thomas Aquinas, not backing down, capitalized on an extra-man opportunity, bringing the game to 3-1. FSU quickly answered back, as Donaldson scored a goal of his own, putting the Bobcats back up by three. A short twenty seconds later, the Spartans found the back of the net again, to make the score 4-2. Frostburg, turning up the heat, scored the next three goals as senior Owen McCallum scored his first of the day, and Donaldson and Bowman each scored their second, for a 7-2 lead at the half.

FSU kept their scoring momentum going, scoring eight straight more goals, and the only eight goals of the quarter.  The wealth was shared by the Bobcats as McCallum, Donaldson, Dooley, and Bowman added to their day, and senior Bubba Love and sophomore Seamus Kerney each found the back of the net for their first goals of the day.  Graduate Mitch Meckley put up another terrific outing in goal, finishing the day with three saves in three quarters, helping FSU earn a 15-2 lead heading into the fourth and final quarter.

Senior Justin Hulse kept the momentum going for Frostburg, scoring in the first minute of the fourth quarter off of a successful clear attempt by the Bobcats. The Spartans responded with tough defense, creating a turnover and a successful clear attempt, that would end in a goal to bring the score to 16-3. A penalty on the Spartans caused a man-up situation for the Bobcats, allowing Donaldson to secure a hat trick on the day and add to the score, making it 17-3. Just over a minute later, Saint Thomas Aquinas found themselves in a double man-up situation, which also resulted in a goal. FSU responded tallying three more goals coming from McCallum, Sipes, and senior Matt Begley, to bring the final score to 20-4, in favor of Frostburg.

Bowman and Donaldson led the way, each capturing a four-goal Texas hat trick, as McCallum finished the day with a three-goal hat trick.  Sipes, Dooley, and Kearney all scored two goals apiece, with Sipes adding a game-high three assists as well.  Sophomore Nate Jones saw some time in goal, making four saves.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 6-0 on the season while Saint Thomas Aquinas falls to 3-3. The Bobcats will stay on the road for their next match up as they will face Wheeling on Tuesday, March 21 for a start time of 4 PM. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com
