Men's Lacrosse Pushes Win Streak to Seven with Victory Over Wheeling

WHEELING, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team blew by Wheeling on the road Tuesday afternoon, winning by a final of 20-6.

Graduate goalkeeper Mitch Meckley began the game with a save inside the first minute, leading to a goal by senior Jake Bowman just 20 seconds later for a 1-0 Bobcat lead. Senior Bubba Love scored off a feed by junior Cole Blanche, then senior Tanner Donaldson got on the board with an assist from Bowman for a 3-0 lead just over three minutes in. Senior Owen McCallum weaved his way for a solo goal at the 9:36 mark, then Love earned his second of the game on an assist by senior Justin Hulse and junior Austin Sipes scored with just six seconds left in the frame for a 6-0 lead at the end of one.

WU finally got on the board at the three-minute mark of the second quarter but were immediately rebuffed when Bowman scored just 40 seconds later. On the 10:30 mark, senior Evan Dere scored his first goal of the season, followed immediately by another Donaldson goal to make the score 9-1. The Cardinals scored again with eight minutes remaining, but goals from Love, Bowman, Sipes, and junior Parker Masters inside the final four and a half minutes paved the way for a commanding 13-2 FSU lead at halftime.

Frostburg kept up the pressure with a Sipes goal 35 seconds into the third, followed by Hulse scoring his first of the day seven minutes later. The Bobcat defense shut Wheeling out the entire quarter, with further goals coming from Sipes and Love to push the advantage to 17-2, as sophomore Alex Walstrum won every available face-off in the period.

Junior Tyler Dooley and freshman Shaun Gillispie scored the first two goals of the fourth, giving FSU their largest lead of the day at 19-2. The Cardinals still had some fight in them, outscoring the Bobcats 4-1 the rest of the way, with Frostburg's lone goal coming from sophomore Blaine Karotko, but the work had already been done, putting the final score at 20-6 in favor of FSU.

Love and Sipes scored four goals and provided two assists apiece to lead the offense, followed by Bowman's three goals and three assists, as McCallum and Dooley both also provided three assists. Sophomore Seamus Kearney led the defensive effort with three caused turnovers and three groundballs.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 7-0 on the year, while Wheeling falls to 2-6. The Bobcats stay on the road for an ECC contest against District of Columbia on Saturday, March 25 at 12 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
