Baseball Drops First Game of Series Against Lee

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Frostburg State Baseball team lost their first game of the series against Lee with a final score of 9-7 on Friday afternoon.

Frostburg came out swinging in the first inning as Sophomore Danny Estrada was it by a pitch to start off the game, and would advance to second on a single from sophomore Mikey Guy.  Both Estrada and Guy advanced on a groundout by junior Ethan Kiple and would both score on the next at-bat as senior Trevor Jones singled to left field helping the Bobcats jump out to an early 2-0 lead.  FSU kept their bats going as junior Aidan Duda smacked a double to right center to advance Jones to third.  Sophomore Randy Steen then grounded out to third base, allowing Jones to score and the Bobcats to add one more run to their first inning lead.

Sophomore Hayden Ford started out strong on the mound for Frostburg striking out the first two batters.  With two outs, the Flames got one run back hitting a homerun over the left field fence.  The Bobcats cooled down in the second inning, not getting anything going on offense, as Lee tied the game at three in the bottom of the inning.

The Flames took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning causing Frostburg to look at their bullpen and bring in junior Will Grove to pitch.  Grove ended the inning smoothly giving the Bobcats the momentum they needed heading into the fifth.  FSU tied things at four apiece in the top of the fifth as Jones knocked a double down the third base line and was scored on an RBI single from Steen.  Grove gave up one hit in the bottom of the fifth but got three easy outs to keep the game tied at four.

The Bobcats bounced back in front taking a 6-4 lead in the top of the sixth as senior AJ Campbell hit a leadoff single and scored on an RBI double from Estrada.  Guy would then get his second hit of the day, another Frostburg double, scoring Estrada and allowing FSU to head into the bottom of the six with a two-run lead.  Grove gave up a leadoff single in the bottom of the inning, but Steen made a diving play at second base to end the inning and keep the game at 6-4.

Lee was able to regain the lead after scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh.  Frostburg fought back in the top of the eighth tying things once again, this time at seven, as Guy captured his third hit of the day with a single to right center and was moved around the bases on a throwing error and fielder's choice, and was scored on a sacrifice fly by Jones.

The Flames responded again, taking a 9-7 lead in the bottom of the eighth.  FSU was unable to get anything going in their last chance at-bats in the top of the ninth, dropping the game with a final score of 9-7.
Guy and Jones led the way for Frostburg, each finishing with three hits on the day.  Jones was also credited with three RBI along with two runs.  Guy and Estrada contributed two runs each as well.

With the loss, FSU goes to 7-4 on the season while Lee improves to 11-10.  The Bobcats will stay put to face Lee for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 11 with the first game set for 12 PM.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
