FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Basketball team was able to keep their lead late in the second half to hang on to beat Glenville State 88-83 on Senior Day at Bobcat Arena Saturday evening.
Prior to the game, the Bobcats honored cheerleading senior Colin Creagan, who has served as FSU's mascot, Bob E. Cat during his time with the cheer squad. Additionally, Bo Schene, Agyei Edwards, Jamil Jones, Marcellus Carroll, Juston Bailey, and Vincent Smalls were all recognized during senior day as all are finishing out their Frostburg careers.Â
As the game got underway, the Pioneers struck first, connecting from behind the arc, but that was answered by a Bobcat three from Bailey. Glenville then fired again, this time on a mid-range step back two, as Bailey responded once more with a two of his own. FSU was able to force a couple turnovers early on that led to easy buckets underneath. Both teams went back and forth scoring wise until Glenville went up 10-7 at the 14:35 mark. Edwards was able to then tie the game up at 10 after converting on an and-one opportunity.
The Pioneers were able to get things going consistently on offense, scoring six straight points before Smalls was able to connect on a layup underneath, to which GSU responded with a layup of their own, this time an and one. Junior Sean Brown, Jr. converted a strong right hand layup for Frostburg, followed by Jones laying the ball in on the next possession for the Bobcats. FSU was able to get within three, before the Pioneers hit back to back threes to go up 29-20. Brown Jr. scored on a layup and a corner three to pull Frostburg within two before Smalls' put-back effort tied the game up at 31. Bailey was able to connect again from behind the arc to put FSU up 34-31 as Edwards was able to finish the half adding eight points of his own to help the Bobcats lead 44-40 at the break.
FSU shot 54.5% from the field with Bailey leading all scorers at the half on nine points, as Edwards added eight and Smalls poured in six.
Frostburg was able to strike first in the second half as some nice ball movement led to an easy putback by Smalls. Glenville quickly answered to take a two-point lead after having multiple attempts on two possessions. Edwards was able to tie the game at 48 at the 16:36 mark with a corner jumper and a few seconds later, senior Jaylon Johnson tied the game at 51 connecting from behind the arc. Smalls was able to regain the lead for the Bobcats after an energetic dunk off a Johnson steal at the 12:47 mark. FSU then went up by four, 61-57, after another dunk, this time by junior Jason Murphy.
Glenville was able to regain the lead with just over nine minutes to play when the Pioneers connected on back to back jumpers. A Murphy layup brought Frostburg back within two, but Glenville responded with a three to go up 72-67. Edwards was able to go coast to coast for back to back layups to tie the game at 75. Smalls, Johnson, and Murphy then each connected on layups of their own to give the Bobcats a five point lead with just under four minutes left to play.
GSU responded with a three to bring the game to 82-80, then both teams were left scoreless for just over two minutes until junior Jaylin Albury made a layup to put FSU up 84-80. The Pioneers connected again from behind the arc to keep their hopes alive and pull within one with 46 seconds left. On Glenville's next possession, the would-be go-ahead shot clanged off the rim, and the 5'11 Edwards rose highest on the court to snare the board and draw a foul. As the teams headed down to the opposite foul line, a technical foul was called on the Pioneer bench that would send Edwards to the free throw line for two shots, plus an one and one from the foul called on the rebound. Edwards would sink all four free throws to give the Bobcats an 88-83 lead with nine seconds left, securing the 88-83 victory for the team's first home win since December 13 over Mansfield.Â
Frostburg finished the game shooting 52.2% from the field. Edwards and Smalls both finished with double-doubles, with the former scoring a game-high 27Â points to go with 10 rebounds, as Smalls finished with 12 points and 10 boards. Murphy finished close to a double-double, putting up 19 points and grabbing seven rebounds, while Albury dished out a team-high six assists.
With the win, FSU is now 7-15 and Glenville falls to 13-9. The Bobcats will stay in Bobcat Arena for their next matchup as they host Alderson Broaddus on Wednesday, February 8 for a tipoff of 7:30 PM. For more information and updates visit frostburgsports.com.
