Clutch Late Face-Off Win Gives Men's Lacrosse Victory Over Lake Erie

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Frostburg State men's lacrosse team defeated Lake Erie in road night game 15-14 for their second-straight one-goal win.

The Storm would score the first two goals of the game before FSU even had a chance to get a shot off for a quick start. Senior Bubba Love would answer for the Bobcats, making the game 2-1 to get the offense going. Senior goalkeeper Mitch Meckley came up with a big save to keep the LEC lead at one, then the Frostburg defense came up with a stop to allow senior Jake Bowman to even things up 2-2.

Lake Erie would swing momentum to their side, picking up three straight goals and making their lead 5-2. FSU's offense was able to calm the Storm, as Bowman found the net for the second time, followed by senior Tanner Donaldson adding his name to the score sheet, pulling the lead back to one at 5-4. LEC responded with their sixth goal, but a penalty kill by the Bobcat defense gave the team a needed spark, scoring four goals unanswered.

Junior Cole Blanche and sophomore Gregg Dort, Jr. found the net in quick succession, then Frostburg took advantage of a man-up situation when senior Owen McCallum fed Love for a 7-6 lead.  Love would then find himself as the assist man, finding a cutting junior Austin Sipes to go up 8-6. The Storm finally broke through to make it a one-goal game after winning the resulting face-off.

After the teams exchanged goals, FSU got back-to-back scores to find some breathing room up by three. First, senior Chase Buckwalter found the net after a face-off violation against Lake Erie, then McCallum converted another man-up opportunity on a feed from Love for an 11-8 lead. LEC got a goal back to get within two, but Love turned in another assist to Sipes and Bowman finished a pass from McCallum to put the Bobcats up 13-9.

The sides went for another back-and-forth score with Frostburg ahead 14-10, when the Storm used their advantage in the face-off circle to get a couple goals back and shrink the lead to 14-12. FSU's offense caused a failed clear as Lake Erie attempted to get out of their defensive half, from which Donaldson fired a shot to the back of the net to get the advantage back to three. Once again, LEC would not be deterred, scoring twice in the final two and a half minutes, taking the game down to the wire. Dort saved his best for last, winning the key face-off with 17 seconds remaining and running the clock down for the Bobcats to seal the 15-14 victory.

Meckley picked up the win in the crease for FSU with eight saves, while Love was the games leading scorer on six total points, scoring three goals and providing three assists. McCallum wasn't far behind with a pair of goals and three assists of his own. Dort and sophomore Seamus Kearney each picked up a game-high four groundballs apiece, with the former winning seven of his eleven face-offs.

With the win, the Bobcats move to 2-0 on the season, while Lake Erie falls to 0-4. Frostburg will return to play next Saturday, March 4 at 1 p.m. when they will face top-ranked Tampa at the MD Soccerplex in Boyds, Md. For more information visit frostburgsports.com
