Men's Lacrosse Stuns Tampa in Statement Win

BOYDS, Md. - The Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team upset Tampa in a thriller 14-12 victory at the MD Soccerplex on Saturday afternoon.

Frostburg came out ready to play finding the back of the net almost three minutes into the first quarter as senior Jake Bowman scored on an assist from junior Austin Sipes.  The Spartans would fire right back almost three minutes later scoring a goal of their own to tie the game at one apiece early on.  Both teams traded a set of goals to keep the score tied, before Frostburg would jump out to a 4-2 lead on goals from Sipes and redshirt senior Tanner Donaldson.  Tampa would respond with a goal of their own before FSU would score back-to-back goals once again, this time with the help of Bowman and senior Bubba Love.

With only 49 seconds into the second quarter, Sipes scored his second goal of the day on an electric behind the back shot on a perfect pass from junior Parker Masters.  The momentum shifted into the Spartans hands as they scored two straight goals to bring them back within two and make the score 7-5 with 9:13 left in the first half.  Love would find the back of the net once again before Tampa scored back-to-back goals to bring them within one.  The Bobcats would end the half on their terms and adding to their lead scoring two goals in 17 seconds to lead 10-7 at the break.

Both teams started to rely more on their defense in the second half, as both teams were scoreless for the first six and a half minutes.  Donaldson scored the first goal of the second half on an assist from junior Cole Blanche.  The Spartans responded almost a minute later to bring the score to 11-8, in favor of the Bobcats.  FSU added to their advantage with six seconds left in the third as Bowman was able to sneak a low shot into the back of the net to secure his hat trick for the day.

After a low scoring third quarter, both teams came out more aggressive as Tampa would score just over two minutes into the fourth quarter to bring them within three.  Bowman would not let the Spartans get any closer as he sliced a shot into the goal for the fourth time allowing the Bobcats to go up 12-8.  Both teams would trade two goals each once again to give Frostburg a 14-10 lead with 2:17 left to play.  FSU played crunch time defense and backed up graduate student Mitch Meckley's terrific performance in goal as they were able to run out the clock and get the 14-12 victory.

Meckley was credited with his third win of the season putting up 11 saves in goal.  Bowman finished the day with four goals as Love and Donaldson scored three apiece, each finishing with a hat trick as well.  Love, Sipes, and senior Owen McCallum were all credited with two assists each.

With the victory, Frostburg moves to 3-0 on the season breaking Tampa's 25 game win streak and handing them their first loss of the season for a 4-1 record.  The Bobcats will return home for their next match up as they host Malone on Wednesday, March 8 for a start time of 4 PM.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
