CARY, N.C. – The Frostburg State Baseball team dropped their first game of their week at the USA Baseball Complex with a 6-2 loss to Goldey-Beacom on Thursday evening.
Â
The game opened up as a pitchers' duel, with sophomore Cael Huyer on the bump for FSU making his first collegiate start. GBC got a pair of runners on first and second with just one out in the top of the first, but Huyer worked a pop-out to first and a routine grounder to third to get out of trouble.
Â
Huyer worked a pair of strikeouts in both the second and third innings, keeping Goldey-Beacom's bats quiet. Senior AJ Campbell got the Bobcats' first hit of the day with two outs in the bottom of the second, but was left stranded after a sharp liner to center was caught.
Â
After a scoreless third inning, the Lightning lit up the top of the fourth with a trio of doubles paving the way to four runs in the inning to take the lead. Before Frostburg had a chance to bat, the skies opened up to some early Spring rain that forced a delay.
Â
The weather brought runs for FSU, starting in the bottom of the fourth where senior Trevor Jones and junior Ethan Kiple drew back-to-back walks, with the former being driven in on a Campbell single to left to put the score at 4-1. In the next inning, junior Stafford Allison roped a single into center and advanced to second on a passed ball before sophomore Randy Steen ripped a double into the gap in left-center to bring the deficit to two at 4-2.
Â
Some great defense in the top of the fifth kept Frostburg within striking distance after GBC put runners at first and second with one out. On a sacrifice bunt, sophomore Mikey Guy made a great play to throw out the runner at first, then Estrada came sprinting in from center to make a sliding catch that prevented the runs from scoring.
Â
Unfortunately for the Bobcats, their bats went cold, as the Lightning's bullpen held FSU in check over the final four innings. Goldey-Beacom's offense capitalized on a pair of Frostburg errors in both the seventh and eighth innings, giving them the 6-2 victory.
Â
Campbell was the only Bobcat to record multiple hits, with a 2-for-3 day and an RBI, while he, freshman Joe Pippin, and senior Andrew Smith pitched the final five innings giving up just two runs, neither of them earned, with four combined strikeouts.
Â
With the loss, Frostburg falls to 3-1 on the year, while GBC remains undefeated at 6-0. FSU is back on the field in a quick turnaround, as they play Kutztown on Friday at 11 a.m. Information and updates will be posted at frostburgsports.com. Â
