Kutztown Completes Late-Inning Comeback Over Baseball

CARY, N.C. – The Frostburg State Baseball team dropped a close game to Kutztown, losing 5-4 at the USA Baseball Complex on Friday afternoon.

FSU started quickly on offense, as sophomore Danny Estrada drew a walk and would be sent around the diamond on a single by sophomore Mikey Guy and a fielder's choice, followed by an RBI single from senior Trevor Jones that would put the Bobcats up 1-0 early on. The Golden Bears would respond right back in the bottom of the first, hitting a two-run homer with two outs, though sophomore Jacob Stretch would get all three outs on strikeouts swinging to end the frame with KU in the lead 2-1.

Both teams stayed quiet in the second, third, and fourth innings as neither side found any offense. FSU finally broke through  in the fifth inning and regained their lead, as sophomore Randy Steen and senior Aronne Dutton were each hit by a pitch back-to-back, then sophomore Christian Shertzer drove them in on a three-run bomb to left that put the Bobcats up 4-2.

Stretch's day was done after five innings of work, throwing a career-high 10 strikeouts to just the two earned runs. The Golden Bears got to Frostburg's bullpen in the bottom of the sixth with a home run of their own to bring them within one, then took the lead in the bottom of the eighth on a well-driven double to left, followed by a single to the outfield scored a pair of runs and made the game 5-4 KU.

FSU would show some fight in the ninth inning, as Dutton singled to right and Shertzer doubled to left, but Dutton was caught in two minds deciding to advance home or stay at third, as the relay throw caught him out trying to dive back to third. With two outs at that point, Shertzer was stranded at second to give Kutztown the win.

Shertzer led Frostburg as he went 2-for-4 on the day with three RBI as four other Bobcats also recorded a hit, while FSU's pitching combined for 15 strikeouts on the day.

With the loss, Frostburg now goes to 3-2 on the season and Kutztown improves to 3-1. The Bobcats will be back at the USA Baseball Complex for a doubleheader on Sunday, February 25 as they will face Dominican (NY), with game one set to begin at 2 PM.
