FROSTBURG, Md.- The 12th-ranked Frostburg State Acrobatics & Tumbling team took on No. 11 King in the season opener, where the Bobcats won with a total score of 270.335-256.335.
FSU came out hot from the start and never looked back with a compulsory pyramid heat score of 9.85 out of 10, on their way to a total compulsory event score of 37.30 to the Tornado's 35.80.
Each team scored similar in the first two heats of the acro event, but it would be Frostburg to take advantage in the seven-element heat, scoring a whopping 9.55 to take the event 27.05-25.45.Â
As they had done all of last season, the Bobcats would have a fantastic third event slate in the pyramid heats, where they were a near-perfect 29 out of 30 possible points, including scores of 9.75 in the synchronized heat and 9.80 in the open heat. King scored a 9.40 of their own in the open heat to put their event score at 25.95, as the teams headed to halftime with FSU ahead 93.35-87.20.Â
The second half opened with Frostburg impressing in third heat of the toss event with a 9.75, as they went on to take a slight advantage again in the event at 27.7-24.95. They would also have great success in the tumbling event, including scores of at least 9.45 in four out of the six heats. The top performances came in the 6-Element Pass, with junior Mayah Morant scoring a fantastic 9.725 out of 9.85, followed by fellow junior Abbie Baker earning a 9.55 out of 10 in the open heat. The Tornado made their top mark in the 6-Element as well, scoring a 9.25 out of 9.5, as the Bobcats again took the event 54.525-51.575.Â
The final showcase of the meet, the team event, had each team performing all the technical aspects throughout the meet, with King starting things on an impressive 92.61 out of 101.16 to end the meet with a score of 256.335. Cheered on by the Bobcat Arena crowd, FSU completed their record-setting meet in fine fashion, getting a 94.76 out of a possible 102.51 points for a final score of 270.335, smashing the team's previous high of 258.99 and securing the meet victory.Â
With the win, Frostburg begins the year 1-0, while King falls to 0-2 on the season. FSU will be back in action on Saturday, February 25 at 6 PM where they will take on Notre Dame (Ohio) for the Falcons' first-ever home meet in their inaugural season.
