Men's Soccer Holds #3 Davis & Elkins to Season-Low in Narrow Loss

ELKINS, W. Va. – The Frostburg State men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought contest to third-ranked Davis & Elkins on Sunday evening, narrowly losing 1-0.

This was the second match against a ranked opponent in the past five days and the second time the Bobcats faced off against D&E this season. In the previous match at Bobcat Stadium, the Senators bested FSU by a score of 5-0.

The Bobcats started graduate Parker Shugars in the goal for his second start of the season, as he was tasked with helping to slow down the nation's top Division II offense. The Senator offense didn't take long to have a look at goal, with the first shot coming in the fourth minute of the game, but couldn't find the target. Shugars got his first save in the 21st minute on a low shot towards the middle of the goal. Frostburg's defense worked hard for a full 45 minutes, taking D&E into the half tied 0-0, while limiting a team that averages four goals a game to just two shots on goal.

The second half started with Shugars picking up another save with an early shot on goal. Davis & Elkins finally broke through the Bobcat defense in the 63rd minute, scoring the eventual game-winning goal from 20 yards out on a well-placed shot that gave Shugars no chance to make a save. The Bobcats continued to push on, keeping the deficit at one while searching for an equalizer. FSU had a late corner and free kick to try and set up some offense, but both were fended off by the Senator defense, resulting in the eventual 1-0 D&E victory.

Shugars finished with four saves on the night, as he and the Frostburg defense held the Senators to a season-low one goal scored.

With the result, the Bobcats are now 2-5-2, while Davis & Elkins moves to 7-0 on the season. The Bobcats return to play in a home match against West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, September 28 for a 7 PM start. For more information visit frostburgsports.com
