Men's Soccer Held to 1-1 Draw with West Virginia Wesleyan

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team hosted West Virginia Wesleyan for a Wednesday night contest, with each side having to settle for a 1-1 draw.

The Wesleyan offense would look to get things started quickly, putting pressure on the Frostburg defense in the early minutes of the match and forcing graduate keeper Parker Shugars into an important save. Possession would go back and forth between both teams, as FSU got their first effort on target from sophomore Matthew Garrett in the 10th minute, but his effort didn't have enough on it to trouble WVWC's keeper.

Frostburg would be first to get on the board in the 25th minute as freshman Blake Hoskins made a run up the right sideline, playing a beautiful cross to the far post, where fellow freshman Renzo Vargas beat his defender to knock the ball past the Wesleyan keeper for a 1-0 lead. WVWC would fail to find an answer the rest of the half to take the FSU lead into halftime.

Frostburg would look to defend their one goal lead heading into the second half and even came close to doubling the lead when sophomore Galo Cappelletti fired two consecutive shots, forcing the Wesleyan keeper to come up big on each occasion to keep the deficit at one. WVWC found their equalizer in the 68th minute, converting on a penalty kick down the middle of the goal to make the game 1-1. Frostburg would look to answer, firing in a corner kick which would find the head of sophomore Caleb Dell and fall just wide of the net. FSU controlled the final minutes of the match, throwing numbers forward in hopes of a last-minute goal, but a goal-line clearance ended any chance of finding a winner as the match finished honors even.

With Wednesday's draw, Frostburg moves to 2-5-3, while Wesleyan moves to 4-2-3 on the season. FSU will return to action on Saturday, October 1 as they host Shepherd for a home contest set to start at 2 pm. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
